The Chevrolet COPO Camaro Can Run An 8.88 (Video)

If Usain Bolt were a car, he would probably be a Chevrolet COPO Camaro, as the dragster’s quarter-mile time is comparable to the record of the gold medalist’s 100m dash. What an entertaining video that would make. However, not so disappointingly, we have come across the first known footage of a COPO Camaro racing in its natural habitat. It appears to be the black model that was loaded onto the trailer earlier last week.

The black beauty featured in the video features one of the three engine choices offered for the COPO Camaro. Namely, a 327 cubic-inch (5.3-liter) V8 accompanied by a beastly blower; a 4.0L Whipple supercharger, to be exact. Chevrolet did state that the configuration was good enough to push the Camaro to a sub-9-second quarter mile time. And judging by the car’s 8.88-second pass seen in the video, its engineers were dead accurate.

For those keeping score, that’s roughly a full second faster than the Mustang Cobra Jet, or the Dodge Challenger Drag Pak.

  1. That was shockingly smooth. I’ll bet that once they get tinkering they’ll get this car to run much faster.

  3. You have a chance to buy one now!
One of these amazing productions will be auctioned at Mecum Auction on November 16, 2012, in Anaheim, CA., at the Anaheim Convention Center.
I wouldn’t miss a chance to purchase such an iconic car that probably has one of the most important heritage of all American muscle cars.

  4. Your copo is running a 4.0 whipple & 5.3 engine. All 5.4 CJ with 4.0 whipple run low 8.20 or better even the 2010 cj runs better than your copo. 2008 cj with a 2.3 whipple runs what your copo runs in stock eliminator. A 5.0 cj with 2.9 whipple runs 8.50, ? will it run with a 4.0 whipple or twin turbo, we do not know yet, but one thing is for sure your copo is slow. Your copo by the way was not even running legal weight for Factory stock showdown @ U S nationals and still only could run 9.43. Tasca runs a 4.0 whipple with his 5.4 cj @ 3200 lbs 7.69 & 179 mph

  5. Why no more videos with the almighty copo? Simple, all the hype was just that, hype. Chris Holbrook ran 8.50 160 mph with just a 2.9 whipple in STOCK ELIMINATOR and you are bragging about your Copo 4.0 whipple running 8.88, you should hide the copo under a rock somewhere so nobody knows you own one. What will a 5.0 do with a 4.0 whipple on it? Why not ask Accufab. 1601 hp @ 8300 rpm, that my friend equates to 7.50- 7.65 @ 180 mph in a 3500 lb CJ. The 2010-2014 CJ’s are all capable of running in the 7 second zone. Your Copo is not even competitive, that’s why they dropped to 350, 396, 427’s for 2013.

  6. Why do all the race car sanctioning bodies handicap mustangs? Ford has to run 200 lbs more, smaller throttle body, and 200 rpm less than competitors. Then you want to brag about your 1LE Camaro. You should go bury your head in the sand. Chevrolet should be sued along with all your car magazines for the fraudulent advertising. All of this is a fraud to get people to buy stock in Chevrolet to keep it from going under and jobs are @ stake.
