No, we’re not wearing sport coats on the putting green of Pebble Beach, as we prefer the bustle and hustle of the 2012 Woodward Dream Cruise. At least that’s what we keep telling ourselves. But that’s not to say we can’t do a little arm-chair show coverage from across the country. And as we’re about to set off on our Friday night adventures, something from Monterrey caught our eye. From Cadillac.
No, sadly, The Wreath and Crest didn’t reveal a new concept car that left mouths agape like last year when they pulled the sheet off the Ciel. But they hinted at one coming to an oncoming auto show with darkened photos from awkward angles. This is the best we’re gonna get, for now.
To make things more mysterious, the car is meant to “reflect back not for nostalgia, but what made us great at the time,” said Clay Dean to AutoWeek. Could it introduce a new design language to the Cadillac brand? And just what type of car is it? Only time will tell.

Wow, talk about front overhang!
If it is not RWD with a V-8 (like BMW, Lexus & MBZ) I don’t need to see it. They should just show it to the executives at Alamo, Avis and the AARP where it will be sold.
Not everything sold by those brands are RWD or even available with a V8.
“RWD+V8” is not the end off of car powertrains and drivetrains. The 3 sells just fine to hundreds of thosands the world over every year, and the RX has never been available with a V8.
Consider that.
I wouldn’t say V8, but most successful luxury brands, with the exception of Audi, are mostly RWD. BMW has never sold a FWD car ever.
When I said the 3, I ment the garden variety 3’s; the ones with 4-pots that sell by the bucket load. Unless you want an M3 (and have the means to pay for it), BMW has shown that you don’t need a V8 in a RWD car to have a great selling car or to make a luxury brand. The RX, well, just throw a rock and try not to hit one.
I’m not anti V8+RWD. I’m anti “V8+RWD IN EVERYTHING ALL THE TIME!!!!!!11”
Right you are about FWD & RWD. The V-8 has nothing to do with performance, it’s about image (I see a lot of gearheads here but not a whole lot of marketeers that can sustain a brand). V-6s have 300 HP now, but you need V-8 to differentiate your car/brand. How do you sustain a $60K price on a premium car with engines from the rental car production line? BMW, MBZ and even Lexus know this. Cadillac thinks they can fool the public one more time, and the Lincoln brand will pay the price by dying. I think the ATS & CTS are pretty awesome, but Cad needs a V-8 flagship to compete and sustain a real image. They built a 16 cylinder during the Depression, and we still talk about it today. Comprende?
“V-6s have 300 HP now, but you need V-8 to differentiate your car/brand.”
Have you even heard of the V-series?
“How do you sustain a $60K price on a premium car with engines from the rental car production line?”
I hope you’re not seriously suggesting that Cadillac should get it’s own engines; completely severed from GM.
May I remind you that those “rental car engines” make up the bulk of CTS sales. The ATS will show the same when the engine take figures show. As for MB, BMW, and Lexus, the majority of their mid-sizers have 6’s. Lets not forget the S6 which comes in at $72K and can be had with an array of “rental car engines” at a sub-$60K price.
Furthermore, if you’re going to keep droning on about a “V8 Cadillac flagship”, stop wasting your energy thinking it’ll be had at something near $60K. This is an S-class sized car; it’ll have S-class features, and will be aimed at S-class buyers with S-class money.
Whatever becomes of it, it won’t be something for CTS-money. It won’t be something you trade in your Z71 Silverado for either. Think wine and cheese, not beer and pizza; and no blue collars should even get into the showroom to touch it.
One last thing, consider that the S-class is available with a 3.0 turbo diesel engine, and I very much doubt that such an engine in a $92K car makes the S-class any less of a car. It is, afterall, the very car that has defined full-size luxury for nearly 60 years.
A V8 alone is not going to do it, Captain. You need to think better than that. If your answer is a 16 cylinder engine just because it was done back in the 20’s, then you really aren’t thinking at all.
Some people are just dumb when it comes to engine tech and luxury car brands (cough, Michael W.) But I digress……..this concept car is going to look like a stunner, something on the lines of the Lexus lf-lc……just look at those lines ! 😀 art and science is the best
so another concept coupe?
All I have say is the architecture better be and I’ll spell it out for you all Rear Wheel Drive! go ahead and hate if you like haha ;-)_
I’d like to see a Zeta, or even Omega based Eldorado. I’m surprised Cadillac hasn’t made an Eldorado concept yet. I think an Art and Science take on it would be awesome.
CTS coupe not good enough for you?
“reflect back not for nostalgia, but what made us great at the time,” for some reason this brings me to the Corvette ad where they talk about America still building rocket ships.
An Eldorado would do nicely, but maybe we could see the XLR coming back before the new ‘vette, or judging by the picture maybe something like a ship from a little longer ago:
