Side Curtain Airbags Deploy While Chevrolet Camaro Drifts (Video)

Imagine hooning about a Chevrolet Camaro in an open clearing of perfectly flat pavement, when suddenly, BANG! Airbags. Airbags all up in your face. That’s what happened to a guy earlier this month in Michigan. Not surprisingly, it was caught on video. The incident also involved OnStar, and a pair of EMTs to cut away the curtain airbags so the Camaro could continue being driven. The driver didn’t seem too bent out of shape, however, with a horned fist popping through the sunroof as the incident happened.

Interestingly enough, this isn’t the first unintended airbag deployment captured on film involving a GM vehicle and performance driving, as there have been multiple reports citing other Camaros and the CTS-V as well. Still, no NHTSA investigation, and no recalls for the Camaro’s side curtain airbags.

Fair warning: there is some foul language in the video.

  1. I remember seeing this a little while ago. I can see how this would happen, as most of the airbags’ functioning (especially that of side airbags) relies upon the measurements of G-forces by accelerometers placed strategically throughout the chassis.

With any luck, the poor fellow was able to get the spent parts replaced under warranty….

  3. When I was a District Service Manager back in the day, this would have been determined to be “no warranty” due to “owner abuse”. Just sayin.

  4. I didn’t see the owner abuse the the side bags. He was almost able to make a complete dunkin donut but drift …………. NOT.

  5. Kind of comforting to see that they work.
Kind disturbing to see that they also work when they are not supposed to..
Now I’m hoping that’s covered under the warranty
