Holden States That Free Trade Agreement Between Australia And United States Would Not Hinder Ute Imports

Upon investigating the matter further (read: contacting Holden directly), the Lion’s PR officials have informed us that with the current free trade agreements between the United States and Australia as they are, there would be no tariff on shipments of a Holden Commodore Ute.

That is to say if General Motors decides to give the Ute the green light as a Chevrolet in America, and to import them along with the upcoming SS sport sedan — which is still officially hush-hush. Hopefully they send the wagon while they’re at it.

  2. It must just be me, but for this to be a Chevy or any amerka branded vehicle it would need some serious cosmetic updating. I know there are people that like the Lumina styling of the Ausie cars but seriously…

  3. May I suggest everyone google: 1992 ASC/Chevrolet Lumina Z34 El Camino Concept…

  4. I don’t think Chevrolet should have the burden of carrying slow selling niche cars like these right now, maybe in 5 years when all the old gm platforms are gone

    1. I agree. Everyone unreasonable wants an Ute with a HO V8, but none of them stop to think about the thousands of V6 stipper models that need to buoy the car to make it profitable for the long term. Such HO V8’s are ultra-niche and Chevrolet doesn’t need something like this yet. MkII Zeta perhaps, but not now just for the sake of it.

The unresonable suffer from “Pontiac syndrome”.

  5. Call the sedan and wagon the Chevelle (since a V6 is apparently coming). Call the ‘Ute the El Camino.

  7. Well Pontiac was supposed to have this Ute a while back when the G8 was being sold. There was even a contest to name it. But I don’t see this being a big seller if does come. It’s a 2 passenger car, and if you look at the truck market, only commercial/business used pickups are regular cab. Pretty much all trucks these days are extended or crew cab. That should tell u something.

  8. Just like the SS sedan the Ute & even the wagon are total niche vehicles in this country & not intended to sell in large numbers(see CTS-V sport Wagon) No doubt these cars will be expensive but the SS variants in Australia are too. The new VF update should put to rest any worries about bland styling, but sometimes subtlety can work well. Chevy needs these vehicles to complete it’s line up, remember there’s a lot of true enthusiasts out there!

    1. Too bad they are consumer minorities; always being outguned by the more profitable and perpetually in demand “volume” cars.
