GMT 900 GMC, Chevy Vehicles Subject To Frequently Cracking Dashboards

This won’t be the first time we have pointed out the fact that the hard plastic dashboards in GM’s GMT900 vehicles, including the Chevy Silverado, Avalanche, Tahoe and Suburban as well as the GMC Sierra and Yukon, simply suck. There’s no getting around it. And recently, we’ve received a mounting amount of tips about these dashboards cracking.

The hairline cracks seem to be occurring on 2007 model-year trucks and SUVs, on either the driver- or passenger-sides. Like so:

According to most of the letters received by GM Authority from readers, the driver-side cracks most commonly occur to the left of the instrument cluster, while those on the passenger side take place in the area surrounding the airbag, closer to the middle of the dash. Some of the customers experiencing this problem have had their dashboards replaced free of charge, while others have not been as fortunate. General Motors hasn’t returned our request for comment.

Meanwhile, users have created a Facebook group to discuss the cracked dashes and the YouTube video above has generated over 43,000 views as of this writing.

        1. I have a 2011 Silverado Crew LT with 11,000 miles and three months left on the warranty…just found a crack above the passenger side dash by the airbag!! I have found numerous photos and it is scary how they all look almost exactly the same!! I’m taking it in to the dealer tomorrow so I’ll post if they honor my warranty. I’ve had some issues with warranty work…one dealer told me that GM has really put pressure on them to keep warranty work to a minimum and often back-charges which leads the dealerships to being shy about problem solving. Go figure!

          1. Ok-I took my 2011 Silverado Crew LT noted in my original post to my dealership late Feb. ’14. They inspected it and without a lot of fanfare promptly replaced the whole dash. No question, comments, etc. They did acknowledge right off that they have seen this problem on both the driver/passenger sides frequently.

        1. I also have an extended warranty that will not cover my cracked dash and passenger side air bag sticking out of dash. It seems like the GM standard warranty should cover a cracked dash on a truck still under warranty.

      6. I have a 13 gmc sierra and i have a crack on the left corner of the passenger side airbag. These dashes are cheap made. Dont know why they went from vinyl to plastic. Also this active fuel management is a poor design as well. Motor is using oil dealership said it’s because of the afm. Its also fouling spark plugs out because of the afm.

Mine too, took it to dlr thinking it was, or should be covered from an accident I had not too long ago and just noticed it, however the svc writer shot me down and said no, because of this. GM is a Brand….and with economy still struggling, I understand the need to protect GMs monetary interest, but if this is an ongoing problem across the board it needs to be covered.

      Reply
      1. There is nothing cheap about the Cruze’s interior. First off, the materials are just fine for what the car is supposed to be. Want a soft-touch dash? Why and what for?

The Cruze’s materials are of a high quality, even though they are not soft. In addition, they are well put-together (thanks to processes at Lordstown) and don’t rattle or squeak, which is more than what can be said for the Cruze’s main competitors. So again, why and how is the Cruze’s interior cheap?

  9. I had no problems with my 07 Silverado. Maybe I has to do with the type of cleaners used on the dash. Many of these can damage (weaken) the material, or make it less flexible and prone to cracking.

  10. The wife’s Denali has the crack on the left side of instrument cluster. She loves the vehicle but the dash is cheap. If the interior is up to speed we will buy the next generation. If the dash is cheap we will look to Cadillac or outside manufactors.

  11. GM’s problems with dashboards are nothing new, in my experience. Chevy replaced the dash in my mid-80’s truck after two years use in N. Virginia. My ’94 Caddy has had its dash replaced – after nearly a year wait for parts. Now it is warping again! Out of warranty now. So far my ’03 Avalanche 2500 is Ok. GM needs to rethink the materials used for dashs; the failure rate is simply too great. My two-bits! Jack in San Antonio.

  12. So we have a 2007 chevy tahoe. We have not had this problem but have known others who have. We found true what the chevrolet dealer told us when we asked if our dash needed to be replaced before any cracks occurred. The dealer said people who have used any type of polish or armor on the dash to give it a shiny look cause the sides of the dash to crack because they’re not made to be shiny, they’re suppose to mimic or look like leather. So answer FOUND!
Same with our 2008 Silverado, no problems either cause we didn’t use any polish or armor And there’s still no cracks. Hope this helps!

  13. I’m wondering if these owners used windshield shades? Heat is hell on plastic, and if they used plastic cleaner and didn’t clean it up very well it could be a contributing factor.

Question is, is the cracking the result of heat/sun damage or is it from long term vibration damage?

Regardless, that’s uncool, I thought we were past that days of cracked dashboards. Hope my CTS continues to hold up, I’m probably gonna start using a sunshade though.lol

    Reply
    1. Completely agree that heat is plastic’s worst enemy… But these components should be engineered with this in mind. Given the extremely cheap tactile feel of these units, I wouldn’t be surprised if someone didn’t test for heat.

On a somewhat related note, it’s interesting that there are several degrees of hard plastic dashboards. On the one end is the unit such as that found in the GMT900s, but on the other end is the unit found in the Cruze (as well as Equinox and Terrain). Both are hard to the touch, but the dash in the Cruze seems of higher quality… Completely my perception and not scientific.

    2. I don’t believe applying any products or use/don’t use sunshades has anything to do with it. I am getting mine replaced today on a 2009 Denali with 35,000 miles. Have maybe used armorall 3 times and use a sunshade religiously when it is not in the garage. I believe there is a bracket under the dash that breaks, given what I heard from a service tech. Once that happens you now have a speaker with a relatively heavy magnet hanging right in the middle of your dash. Once the bracket goes away the weight of the speaker causes the dash to flex up and down, eventually cuasing the plastic to crack. I was recently watching my dash on a highway trip bouncing up and down llike a trampoline, so to me it is obvious that this movement over time simply causes fatigue in the plastic and it breaks. I am getting GM to foot half my bill, after numerous calls and complaints, but even at that costs me $400 out of pocket. I believe the only reason I got that is low miles and the fact that it is my 4th Yukon. Still not happy that this happens on a $60,000 vehicle – obvious there are design issues here. Do you not find it interesting that the dealerships carry dash replacements in stock??? When I asked if I would have to wait to order the parts the answer was no wait, we have them avialable…. What does that tell you?

      Reply
  14. how many of these have been produced? between the trucks and SUVs over a million right? i’m not saying this isn’t something GM should have caught while the GMT900s were being developed, just that with the modern media outlets of the day; what used to be a minor issue can look like a very big issue very quickly without a little perspective.

i have friends who own these trucks and i have driven plenty variants myself. whether new, used, or a high mileage rental – i’ve never experienced any of these problems.

I told them go ahead and when GM makes a formal recall of this part, I want my $100 back. Fair enough. I might add that this car sits outside in the South Florida sun 24/7 because it won’t fit in my garage. Going to purchase a sun shade for it and see if I can keep this one from cracking.

    1. Update. When I went to pick up my Suburban, ( I just had this done 1-18-2013) I inspected the work and they did an outstanding job. I told the service rep I was very pleased and thanked him. I followed him to the cashier and signed some paperwork and took out my credit card when he looked at me and said “No charge”. He only said that he had a conversation with his boss and someone from GM. I don’t know if they are going to split the loss or what. I purchased this new at this dealer so maybe it was worth it to keep a customer. Anyway I am very pleased with the outcome. Good luck to all.

There are less than 50,000 miles on the vehicle. I took it to the dealer as I was concerned about the airbag, and was told that it is a very common problem. However, since my vehicle is over the 36,000 mile mark it will be $900! We purchased the extended warranty in case we had battery issues with hybrid, but it does not cover dash either. I am so angry about this! Obviously it is a common problem and posted all over the internet. Everyday, I look at the cracks in my $50,000 Tahoe and am absolutely DISGUSTED! Thanks for the great customer service Chevrolet, with your flawed dashboards!

  31. I have just dropped off my Sierra pickup with 27000 miles to have the piece of dash that is cracked replaced. GM needs to own up to this problem of inferior material being used on this style dash and recall and replace it. Sometime ago I had to replace a sun visor on my 2008 Toyota Camry because it was falling downward and blocking the drivers view, it would not stay up in either position. This week I recieved a recal notice on the visor. I have submitted my receipt for reimbursment, the point is if Toyota is recalling to replace a sun visor surely GM should replace these dash parts since it is a wide spresd problem and they know it.

  53. I have both a 2002 and 2009 Avalanche. The 2002 I used Armorall products for years. The 2009 I have used only once in 2 years. The 2002 has NEVER experienced cracking but the 2009 less than a month ago develop one crack..then two and in the exact same places as witnessed by other owners.

2 local Chevrolet dealerships/body shops/sales gave me the blank stare and the “well, I’ve never seen that before”. Since few items actually stick to the acrylic or ABS or whatever was used on this dash, it is hard to stop the dash from vibrating when over a bumpy road, increasing the problem. A neighbor whose profession is to vinyl and plastic repair in vehicles told me he could fix it but there would be no guarantee.

This is evidently a problem Chevrolet and GM has known about since at least 2007 in other vehicles besides the Avalanche. Yes, it pissed me off that at 67,000 miles I have to be concerned about safety, resale value and the plain embarrassment of a poorly designed and poorly developed dashboard and makes me hesitate to ever buy another Chevy product for I know well enough that the local garages won’t fix this. I refuse to pay $1000 for a dashboard on a vehicle I bought in good faith for over $40,000.

  55. Just got off the phone with GM customer service 800-462-8782 and was assigned a service number. Have been told a district specialist will call within 24 hrs. In the meantime I have contacted 3 of the major Chevrolet dealerships in the Knox or surrounding county area and one informed me that they have seen problems from 2007 to 2009 and covering just what I have found out. Sierra, Yukon, Avalanche, Tahoe, Silverado and Suburban GM models have had similar problems. Told also that if out of warranty if anything GM will pro-rate a fix.

I agree with others that one a class action suit at a minimum should be done. Affecting the passenger air bag section, who knows what this damage might result in. Interference with proper application of the air bag (perish the thought) in the event of an accident? But cheaply made to begin with, whether the original purchaser or a 3rd party investing in a used vehicle, no matter if it has 50k or 100k miles on it, the dashboard should not be that cheaply made.

A Mechanical Engineer by trade myself for over 30 years, I’ve seen poorly designed products in my past, but to compromise a highly visible and safety oriented item like a dash board and since 2007 with 6 years under the belt now with not having improved the design is just plain wrong!

I agree that I will hesitate to ever purchase another GM product based on salesmen at local dealerships giving the blank stare or service managers not owning up to the problem or just plain cheap design to compromise on lightening the load of a vehicle…c’mon….I’ve dealt with design of plastic items in the past. A bit of reinforcement ribbing underneath the fragile areas wouldn’t increase the weight but just strengthen the weak area and doesn’t adversely affect a mold cavity for extruding this dashboard.

I await the decision of a specialist by GM and argue having to pay a pro-rated fee but it will be better than biting the cost of the entire replacement plus labor locally.

(That’s how I ended up here) Have always owned Toyota trucks, really like the way the new Silverado looks. This will be the last Chevy I own, back to the Tundra next year. All because of the way the manufacturer handles stuff like this.

  57. I Have spent over a week, contacting 3 dealerships in my area in addition to a GM customer service rep who indicated that my 2009 Avalanche issue would be addressed.

Anything I dislike more is to be told one thing only to get something else. We as consumers should not have to spend countless trips down telephone lane to be heard or to discuss over and over the obvious. Service reps in 3 local dealerships have now admitted to me that they have seen the problems identified by others between 2007 and 2011 GM vehicles.

Whereas I have seen consumers respond that GM authorized a free replacement up to $200 or $250, I was quoted $345 + tax to get a replacement. Granted it is better than paying full price for the change BUT not one consumer should have to pay a single penny to have a defective dashboard replaced. Asked what kind of mileage I have on the vehicle, it SHOULD NOT MATTER what mileage is.

A consumer does not buy a vehicle, new or used with the idea that defective parts will have to be replaced at their cost.

Asking WHY I should have to pay $150 more than others I have seen post their notes, I have gotten no calls back from GM Customer service or the service rep manager who stated clearly that by end of business day Monday I would hear from them.

If others are experiencing this type of interaction, it is a growing shame in the service oriented industry and continued loss of good will is not being presented. However it isn’t just GM related products we see this in.

Mine are to the left of the instrument cluster and above the airbag, passenger side. Mine are very noticeable. Chevy has never offered to replace it. Now that the amp is bad on the Bose stereo, we will look into another vehicle. Too bad Chevrolet, you won’t be getting our business again.

After looking it up on the internet, I realized that alot of people are having the same issue. I was told that I was out of warranty and it would cost me $400 to replace. I am not going to replace with a stock dash that will crack again. This was my first GMC (I usually buy Chevys). It will probably be my last.

I have purchased two new Chevrolet vehicles from Dealers and I just can not believe that Chevy will rather loose a dedicated customer than pay 800.00 dollars to replace a faulty part. I have paid over 50.000 dollars to GM for both my vehicles and they will not do me right.

I contacted Chevy customer service and was advised to take my truck in to a dealer in order to make sure it was a factory defect. After six days of waiting, they have offered to pay for 10% of the cost as if they are making me a favor. I have advised them that I will seek legal counsel and will attempt a class action law suit against GM/Chevrolet.

Then I started to research and found a lot of gm suv @ dealerships in the island. What is going to happen now since its pretty much worldwide?

  68. All of you are wasting everyone’s time with this dashboard thing. Apparently none of you remember that in the 80’s and early 90’s nearly every dash would crack prior to being 5 years old. You’re all part of the problem of frivolous lawsuits that only drive up the costs of products and inflation. The only winners of your silly lawsuit ideas will be the lawyers. This issue is so trivial it makes me sick. People are suffering and starving and the thing your most upset about is a little crack in your dash. Chevy has even helped pay for the dashes for some of you when they had no obligation to do so. I’ve seen other car makers with cracked dashes so settle down.

Now I’m not saying that GM may not be responsible in some way, but a cracked dash is such a minor thing in the overall operation of the car as to be almost inconsequential.

Dashboards should not fall apart like this so soon on and so many vehicles. Just because it doesn’t immediately jeopardize the owners lives doesn’t mean it’s not worthy of a recall.

  75. Look at all the replies to include mine. GM DOES NOT take full ownership of this problem. Whereas some owners got theirs replaced free years ago, the bulk of us all that includes myself, had to struggle with 3 local dealerships, spent time tracking down a customer service rep to in the end spend nearly $400 out of pocket to replace what should have been done FREE!!!!!! Yes, aggravating as the 2013 Silverado has the same exact un-reinforced dashboard as my 2009 Avalanche or your 2007 Yukon or those with a Suburban and the list goes on from there. Poor politics and poor customer satisfaction. As it is I have a Equinox that is nothing but cheap plastic parts that have either sheared off, broken off or are hanging from a thread….different topic but the point is….GM should be taking ownership and correcting faulty items first time out the chute. Over 6 years later with a same issue? Ludicrous.

  76. GM will not take ownership of this or even think about recall or free replacement until several people lose their lives and or get injured of the dash cracks. I also have the door handles on both sides with the chrome peeling and have cut my hands and several passengers many times.
GM is not wanting to fix them. There are well over a 1,000 complaints on the Chevy forum site about this. I truly don’t understand why the NHTSA has not addressed this just for the fact of the flying plastic from these cracked dash’s if they are in a head on crash.

It was the dash cracking in the upper left corner near the passenger airbag. I don’t use anything on the dash. The tempatures was in the 70’s and the truck was running setting still. I would have to guess that when the passenger airbag is activated it somehow puts pressure on the hard plastic dash in this spot. Everyone on here has the same issue. The only reason mine has lasted for 5 years is because I rarely have a passenger in my truck.this problem is not related to using armore all or any other product on your dash. This is a defect that should be recalled.

Months ago I had my 2009 Avalanche dash replaced and yes, had to fight to get the near $300 reduction. Commenting to this forum won’t do jack diddly…it is a legal stand. 2013 GM trucks have the same fricken dashboard as 5 years ago despite the ongoing problem. It is a sad reflection on customer service. Moral of the story? walk! Don’t buy a vehicle. Then see what the manufactures would do…but yah right….that’ll never happen until teleportation is created.

I have a 2007 Tahoe with the crack over instrument cluster, and my local dealerships (2 in Austin, TX) both confirmed that GM has a $100 replacement program where you can get the entire dash fixed for $100. By brother had his replaced on his 2008 Silverado. Here’s the catch… They will not honor this on vehicles with more than 100K miles. My tahoe is 100% garage kept but my wife puts a lot of miles on it, so I’m out of luck. What does mileage have to do with a dash cracking. Very frustrating. If your truck has less than 100K miles, get it into the dealership.

Look at the 2013 Silverado and see the exact same dashboard is used. I saw mine after being replaced and inquired from the tech who replaced it. GM has done nothing regarding modifying this problem since 2007.

I even stated so the other people around the country with the same crack some might some might not have a aftermarket radio and the cracks in the same damn place. How do you explain that. They said not our problem. I can say after this I dont think ill ever buy a new gm vehicle not worth my hard earned money. 114. 2007 Chevrolet avalanche dash cracked in both places as frequently stated on all the forums, to the left of the instrument panel and to the right of the airbag. Several agents of the dealership said the have seen this many times and when I called GM the agents said the see this all the time and replacing if for free would make sense. After requesting this for replacement all of a sudden their stories changed stating they occasionally have seen this and couldn’t warrant full replacement of my 6 year old 70k truck. The offered to pay 30% of replacement but given this is the second time I have had it replaced in 2 years they could not guarantee anything won’t crack again past 12 months. After talking to GM again and the dealer asking how they came up with their decision is received nothing but excuses, cold responses and a lot of arrogance . I have purchased GM vehicles for the past 20 years and was recently looking to expand my fleet including my wife’s new vehicle. GM employees need to be retrained on the cost of getting a new customer versus keeping one because they lost me and unfortunately word of mouth travels pretty fast with today’s media, one lesson that also needs to be trained on.

The driver’s window makes a loud squeeling noise in the cold weather when you roll it up and down. That was UNDER WARRANTY, which their fix (temporary to say the least) was lubricating the window. It still does it to this day.
The plastic cover or coating on the center pod of the steering wheel is peeling off (Dealer would not fix) and the plastic chrome around the drivers door handle was peeling off. Dealer replaced the door handle.

Delivered it to the dealer on the first chance I had (December 2, 2013). Dealer said my warranty expired two days prior (November 30, 2013) and that the entire dash had to be replaced. $980…

Called GM customer care and they offered to replace the dash for $400.

  125. My dash on my 2007 Suburban cracked in both areas exactly as described (and common it sounds). 6 inch crack on driver’s side up the back left side of the instrument cluster and 2 inch crack on the passenger side between the airbag and the back of the dash. GM should issue a recall and ship dash covers (like the one on txdashcovers.com) to local GM dealers to cover their cracked defective dashboards on their popular vehicles. Jeffro in Eastern NC.

I dont understand why Chevy would not take care of this when it is such a known problem. I guess when you pay $45k on a vehicle you cant expect much. Dont think I will be buying another Chevy anytime soon.

I have owned nothing but Chevy trucks for the past 21 years. I had a 1993 Chevy Silverado that I drove until 2000 with no dash problems, and then a 2000 Chevrolet Silverado that my family drove for 350,000 miles until last year, with no dash problems. The 2010 is parked in a covered parking garage during the day and a garage at night. I find this totally unacceptable. They have obviously gone to much cheaper material for the dashes. I was told by the dealer that I went to, that based on the miles on my vehicle GM would only cover roughly 1/3 of the cost of repair. leaving me to pay over $500.

Then I asked her when I purchased the car the salesman never mentioned anything about where I lived, the vehicles climate needs. This may not be a safety concern, but for the amount of money we pay for these vehicles we should have better craftsmanship and GM should stand behind their product. Look at their recalls and they want brand loyalty, this doesn’t help.

At 80k 2 cracks appeared at the instrument cowl. Also, the flat black rubberized coating on the steering wheel is peeling off and most of the paint on various buttons has worn off. I replaced the differential at 75k, both passenger side electric locks at 25 and 30k, driver side electric window motor at 60k, and other interior defects to numerous to mention. This was a $44k truck in 2008. I have a 77 Chevy Cheyenne P/U with less trouble. GM will not get my money again after the arrogant FU attitude from the dealer. To bad – I was a Chevy guy for 44yrs. Ironically my wife drives a 2007 Camry and she received a letter from Toyota indicating they had reports about their dashboards melting or cracking and Toyota informed her to bring it to the dealership to be replaced free of charge. I will update everyone as it all plays out.I am at dealership now and since it is the GMC dealership they are trying to brush it off..I am suppose to call the GMC recall center when I get home to update them of the dealerships findings concerning my dash. I am ready to start a class action suit. If all of you that have this problem would email me with your name and contact info and spread the word on other sites concerning this… I will contact and get a lawyer to handle our case and make GMC stand behind their very expensive product that they are not backing. I purchased the truck with 65K and no crack.. for damn good money!!. The dealer will fix for 600 dollars. I simply cannot justify the cost to fix so I will probably attempt to hide the crack and secure from further damage by putting velcro tape over the area. I am sick that I have to resort to this for such an expensive truck!

I am now sorely aware that GM engineered these trucks poorly with very CHEAP interior materials. However, I still think the 2007-14 exterior design is the best to date… and these trucks are well made mechanically. All and all I am still happy to dive the vehicle. I do wish that GM would stand by the product and help those effected by this unfortunate defect.

  166. 2010 Silverado 1500 LTZ Crew Cab, leather interior now with 40,000 miles. I bought the truck back in February 2015 with the cracked dash above the instrument cluster from nearly the tip of the visor hood alway to the end of the dash panel at the defroster panel. I just took the instrument cluster out tonight to see if I could somehow repair the crack. I do not have a center radio speaker in the dash panel so there was nothing on the underside that could have caused the crack. Could only put some duct tape on the underside to try and keep the dash from vibrating. Now that it has been in the 90’s as the dash heats up the crack closes up and when I put the A/C on the crack opens up. Obviously the plastic is expanding and contracting to much due to tempature which causes the cracks in the first place. I am going to take it to the dealership and see what if anything they will do.

    1. Dashboard cracked (40k miles)
    2. Pockets behind driver and front passenger seats broke (about 20k miles)
    3. Center seat/storage door in the front row broke (about 35k miles)
    4. Door handles chipping off, causing my wife to cut her hands (70k miles)

I was considering the Toyota Sequoia before deciding to buy this suburban. I was hesitant at first thinking American cars are historically bad and cheap but thought American trucks are solid. Needless to say, I am disappointed in this $48,000 truck.

  171. We have a 2010 Tahoe that has cracks in the dash. The first crack at the left corner of the passenger air bag happened in late June. The crack on the driver’s side over the instrument panel started the second week of July and is progressing rapidly towards the top of the dome(left of center) after forking approximately 2″ from the front edge of the dash. This problem is widespread in certain models of GM/Chevy vehicles, and GM should be ashamed of itself for not taking responsibilty for the defect and replacing the cracked dashes. Customer satisfaction and pride in workmanship do not appear to be in GM’s mission statement. Otherwise, this company would address the problem and replace the defective dashboards with an improved product. We WILL purchase another SUV from someone, but it will not be a Chevy/GM vehicle.

Anyway, guess I’m gonna go by the dealership and ask the million dollar question……”what can be done” and see what they say. All the money that we throw down for these vehicles should buy us some quality products at least. Can’t believe there has not been a recall……guess the calls are going to the wrong place. Brad…..if you are just NOW getting on board with a dash cracking, think about ALL of us who have complained in the past and “finally” GM owned up and replaced a few but at a cost to some, like myself. Sad thing is from 2007 to 2015 many Chevy vehicles had the same issue. It probably took 4 years for some to surface but then a sea of people complained. The Part by the defroster in mine vibrates like crazy…just as the dash did and I expect the replacement one I “paid for” will crack one of these days. GMC doesn’t give a rats behind if you go somewhere else any more than Chevy did for me. Mine was changed out about a year or so ago.

Then 2 days ago I cleaned the interior of the tahoe from top to bottom. Using a sunshade appearnestly doesn’t help uv protectant doesn’t help. Anyone have any idea’s what may help. I’m assuming there isn’t any help other then maybe storing it in climate controlled garage out of the sun. I will probably replace the dash myself in the near future. But I’m sure I will encounter the same problem. I had a 2003 siverado and loved it my wife and I love the tahoe but this problem turns a beautifull vehicle into looking like trash and on top of it I have to be concerned with getting in an accident and the dash blowing out peaces at the passeners or me.

  203. 2010 silverado truck with cracked dash, took it in but said 4 months too late on warranty, but did not know how long it had been there. I feel there is a flaw and should be recalled anyway. I guess time and mileage on a vehicle is a good way of getting out of their responsibility.

  212. I am among the many that have complained about this and After replacing my dashboard 2 years ago it is cracked “again” and has been for 2 months. Now the defroster pad is also cracked…so that makes 2 different panels. Crap choice of vendors and poor representation by Chevrolet.

Last week I visited the same dealership that replaced the panel 2 years ago. I was told flat out that Chevrolet made the decision over a year ago to NOT assist customers. This does suck!

  213. I bought a 2007 suburban new and within a few years the dash cracked. Now it looks like a piece of marble with cracks running all through it in all directions. When I took it to my local Chevy dealer I was told that they weren’t aware of any problems with the covers, and it would cost over $800 for them to fix it.

I am not satisfied with the handling of this problem and I tell everyone who will listen about the lack of service.

    1. I had a similar issue in my Yukon severL years ago. I ended up making lots of noise with the dealership, went straight to the owner, as well as directly with GM. Took me quite a while but I was eventually able to get GM to foot the bill for half and the dealership also tossed in $200 so ended up costing me around $200, which I still was not that happy about, but much better than paying $800. My Yukon was out of warranty at the time and has less than 40,000 miles. I also had a valid extended warranty but, yep, does not cover this as the dash is considered an accessory, really??? Your dealership telling you they have not heard about these is crap, or someone who has little experience. If you look online as I did, this model of GM trucks were plagued with this issue. So they may no longer respond to the noise, but if you are willing to put in the time to gripe for a while you might get some relief…

  215. I have a 2009 GMC Sierra model SLE and my dash has now cracked 3 times. It was replaced by GM at 39,130 on 01/01/2011 miles at no charge just above the LH air bag and the again at 68,479 miles on 06/17/2013 for $100.00 dollars and has now cracked again at 102,000 miles and they will not replace under any kind of warranty policy the last cost I received was $$1040.00. I replaced the above dash section PN # called an extension at 103,000 miles (PN # 23224733) which cracked at a personal cost of $324.10. At that time I saw what GM,S problem was with cracking dashes. They allowed too much of the forward panel to rest on the extension with no support. Now more of my dash has cracked in three different places making the appearance even uglier than before. Is there no help for this to consumers for this maleficence by GM for this wrong doing.

  216. I have left more than one comment regarding this matter. What is comical is that the same dealership that replaced my dash at the $350 personal cost (or similar) sends me sales notices and letters asking that I stop by for they NEED vehicles like mine for trade. Well, yah I know it’s a sales ploy but my response is why in the Hell should I deal with them as a dealership if they are unable to come to bat for me over this issue, let alone the Airbag recall which is also a joke. You, I and others will be living with this issue and it will be a sales put off point when it does come time for trade in. The suggestion/hint was to just cover the dash…..what a freaking joke. I worked as a Plastics Project Engineer briefly in the late 80’s and know enough about poor design. The underside of the dash has no ribbing for support in more than 3 areas. GM products between 2007 and 2013 were affected by this. In my book a simple mold change would have corrected the problem but GM is too arrogant and an engineer remained employed at the expense of consumer.

  217. Have 2012 GMC Sierra 1500 4×4 with crew cab. No cracks yet but I need to know the general type of plastic that is used for the dash boards and instrument panels. I think it is ABS but another string lead me to TPO-TPUR. I want to add a very high grade wood veneer to parts of the dash but the weak point is to know what the dash etc is made from so I can choose the very best adhvesive. ABS would be good news.

  218. It’s nice to note that lot’s of people are whining and sniveling about the dash cracks on the GM dashboards ! But what about the fix? Obviously GM is doing nothing! All I want to do is prevent further cracking so I can rid myself of this piece of crap. Anybody know what the plastic is?….ABS?…There are a lot of glues out there that may help fix or prevent further cracking . If only GM would say what this grade of plastic is!
