Chevrolet Volt To Break Sales Record

As August winds down, the Chevrolet Volt continues to wind up, with sales expected to surpass 2,500 units in August — a record for the plug-in extended-range electric vehicle. Sure, it’s not selling like the Silverado, but that’s not the point, is it?

This news also comes hot on the heels of reports that the Volt’s assembly plant in Detroit-Hamtramck, Michigan will idle between mid-September through mid-October to retool for the 2014 Impala. Whether the Volt can continue its growing momentum while its birthplace takes a break will be something to watch for.

  1. I assume the writer means 2,500 units for the month of August (versus YTD)?

  2. Ray it reads “with sales expected to surpass 2,500 units in August”. So yes the month of August is the subject and I’m guessing 2500 a month is the highest for the Volt.

  5. Sales of Volt will be brisk for the first few days of September also, and if you’re on the fence, or planning to buy a Volt – NOW is the time as there are incentives from GM to dealers ending SEPTEMBER 4th.

Some dealers have opted to ignore GM’s incentives since they’re set rather high – others went all-in in August and got creative – a Colorado dealer actually ran a $199/mo for 2 yr. lease on 8 Volts to reach it’s goals. I’ve seen a couple of Florida Chevy dealers advertising select Volts at $2500-$3000 off MSRP – it’s time to look as these incentives from GM are ending very soon. Naturally, these incentives ran through August and are responsible for August’s bump.

GM gives each dealership a target number of Volt sales between May and September. And if that dealership sells triple that number, the dealer gets a $2500 credit towards future floor product purchases from GM on EVERY Volt they have sold during this period. The wind down of this program is September 4th.

GM has been correct in saying they are not “discounting” the outgoing 2012 Volts over 2013s. This incentive deal covered ’12 and ’13 models. One visit to gm-volt.com forums pages will find Chevy dealers fighting one another to gain Volt sales. The deal is almost over – so I’d act fast. I saw one dealer offering a Volt for $34,999 before tax rebate.
