We’ve been substantially clear about our position on NASCAR: the sport has veered substantially off track since the ’70s — when it featured slightly modified versions of production vehicles. Nevertheless, it still manages to attract and maintain an enormous fan base — even as drivers race cars that are in no way similar to actual vehicles on the road. But that’s not what this is about.
This, ladies and gentlemen, is about the fact that Chevrolet will race a Camaro SS stock car in NASCAR next year according to Jalopnik. The car itself looks way better (more intimidating) than the stodgy Impala it replaces — and will likely have a companion in the Chevy SS Performance Sedan — which remains under wraps… for now.
Of course, the Camaro race car is still a stickered-up tube-frame-based body. Oh well. The point is that this will likely be a boon for marketing the Camaro as well as the Chevy brand.

Why do they still do this ? it looks nothing like the real Camaro
Tell me ……………… is a Rolex Vette a StockCar? or a stickered up tube chassis race car?
i do’t follow, whats your point?
i don’t follow, whats your point?
This car will only race in the Nationwide Series, aka, the AAA minor league of Nascar. It was more or less done in response to Ford and Dodge racing the Mustang and Challenger models in this series.
From the front view, this is about as good as you can get. From the side, not so much. But the Mustang and Challenger don’t carry their factory silhouettes either.
But, there is something to be said that in both of the major Nascar Car Series, Chevrolet will have rear wheel drive, V8 cars for the first time in forever.
I’m excited about this.
How about the WTCC Cruze ………… stock or stickered up tube chassis race car?
It’s a Cruze with tunes. A real Cruze!
“stock” in the sense that it started as a REAL Cruz.
So your saying it’s a 100% gutted car with added stiffening along with lets say at least a six point cage, much larger than stock aftermarket brakes. Suspention items that you can not buy at the GM parts counter. Engine performance items and a tune to go with them that can not be found in the performance catalog. Well thats one race car thats based off the factory chassis.

This looks ridiculous to me? Is anyone going to look at this and then run down to the dealer to check out a Camaro? I think, they should have used the Malibu instead,it has Camaro styling cues anyway. Who cares what Ford & Dodge have? Toyota still using the Camry name.
Nascar should have started a pony car series 2-3 years ago? Run 20 or so races, some ovals, some road courses. Use the actual bodies from Mustang,Camaro and Challenger with sealed engines, etc…. By now they could have possibly merged it with Nationwide? Instead they make excuses, meanwhile, interest, attendance and most importantly sponsorship is stagnant at best.
i say the people in charge of nascar should make a road racing league called oh i don’t know how about TRANS AM then make it like the german touring masters
They should have done this when the Nationwide series updated its car in 2010.
Does anyone remember Trans Am? Factory backed factory cars “modified” for racing. People still love seeing them at vintage races! Don’t remember if the IROC cars were stock or tube chassis. They may have evolved to tube chassis? The NASCAR Pony cars look weird.
IROC cars did indeed “evolve” from manufacturer based race cars to silhouette/tube race cars.
What I don’t get with the current state of NASCAR, is why not just make it a literal silhouette series. I understand the demands and rigors of racing dictate major concessions to the design of a race car in the name of safety and reliability. But to call some generic blob with stickers a Impala, or Mustang, or charger, when it looks NOTHING like its name sake is ridiculous!
Go the V8 supercars route: complete race car with scaled down, near carbon copy replica of the factory body on top. That’s an awesome concept. When you see one of those cars on the track, for all intents and purposes your eyes see a REAL factory based Falcon or Commodore when in reality the cars are anything but.
I thought the point of “stock car racing” was to have vehicles the spectator could identify with, desire and purchase; now days that is anything but the case.
NHRA Pro Stock cars look more like the stock version then does the NASCAR version. The rear side windows on all brands looks terrible.
