For those of you who own cars with OnStar subscriptions, but seem to hardly use them, there’s now a way for you to make a little money. That’s because RelayRides, America’s first peer-to-peer car sharing marketplace and OnStar have teamed up to allow owners to rent out their idled vehicles to those that could use them.
RelayRides’ renters can unlock reserved OnStar-enabled cars simply by using their smart phones. RelayRides is the first third-party developer to integrate with GM OnStar’s proprietary application program interface (API) that will be available to other developers later this summer. By utilizing OnStar’s API, renters can unlock the doors via smart phone or by replying to a text message.
OnStar and RelayRides provide the opportunity for owners to earn up to a couple hundred dollars a month just for renting out their vehicle. And for peace of mind, all reservations are covered with an insurance policy.
