The final counts are in for the month of June 2012, and the Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck and Malibu sedan were the only vehicles representing General Motors in the top 10 selling vehicles in the United States. Predictably, the Silverado came in second well behind the Ford F Series, while the Malibu came in fourth behind the Toyota Camry — but just by roughly 700 units. However, the Cruze was nowhere in sight, as sales for the not-so-compact sedan have stalled 23.8 percent compared to a year ago. This may be due to the massive recall that was recently implemented, or it could be due to the lack of variety.

If I was not an auto enthusiast or a GM nut and I was considering a Cruze but someone told me about how they were recalled because of fires, I would be like oh heck no… This was the one vehicle they needed nail and yet here we are… There is to much competition out there to let such a rediculous product development Fail happen on such a critical vehicle… Most people just default to what they know, oh I know Honda, Toyota, Nissan and now Hyundai offer great compact vehicles, I can’t go wrong with them and they don’t burn to the ground…
And VW as well. The new Jetta may have been cheapened in various ways, but it’s still an excellent and classy compact.
GLI is a better choice then the regular jetta if you can afford it.
@Drew The GLI is absolutely the better choice. My fiancé was this close (demonstrates on fingers), this close to replacing her 2006 Volvo S40 with one. This close… but decided she wants to keep her S40 for a few more years.
But the SEL is pretty good as well. Of course, it doesn’t have the 2.0T engine or the fancy-pants suspension setup, but are those really needed for a good compact vehicle that’s, dare I say, on the more luxurious side of the class?
Or can be gas price
same question ….do you thing hyundai dont do recall,,is possible this company have no recall..
it was surprising that elantra sold less than the Cruze this month…
Why is that surprising? A Hyundai model has never outsold that of a Chevy… Perhaps with the slight exception of the new Sonata maybe once during its launch months of heavy promotions.
Between you and me, the Elantra is the worst of the new compact class of vehicles. So is the Sonata. Of course in my opinion.
really? Why?
But to be honest my sister was thinking about replacing her G6 to Elantra until she saw the new Verano
Math, all car companies have recalls, I recognize that… Not all companies have recalls on there star vehicle to prevent it from burning to the ground… To the consumer this is a major red flag, not just directed toward that exact vehicle but to the brand as well.. How many have steared away from Chevy all together because of this…
You are so right on this one. My sister is going to buy a car soon, and she will not even look at Toyota’s because of the gas pedal/acceleration problem. Car enthusiasts understand that stuff happens, it goes with the territory. But the average buying public – no way!!! People could be turned off about Cruze for a decade!
Alex, absolutely the Jetta is a clear competitor to the Cruze, and to me very nice; my experience with VWs is less than favorable though, very expensive to maintain.
my brother has had good luck with his gti, I prefer the golf though. and really depends on a dealer, a few vw’s around here are pretty good. only one gm car i might be looking at, would be the verano turbo.
Yeah very expensive to maintain and even worse with the horrible 1.4 TSFI ( twin charger).
You cant even get the 1.4 in the states.
We can’t get the 1.4 here, the newer version of the 2.5 has been getting better scores.
One factor leading to weaker Cruze sales is the presence of Honda’s new Civic. Sales have really ramped up there.
even though Civic hasn’t changed much from last gen
Are you kidding?! The Elantra worst compact? Have you researched the Corolla lately?!
@Hunter “Between you and me, the Elantra is the worst of the new compact class of vehicles. So is the Sonata. Of course in my opinion.”
Key word being “new” — as in the “NEW compact class of vehicles”. The Corolla has been around for a good 6 years now and is about to get replaced… so it’s not part of the “new” class of compacts 🙂
But yes, it’s not as competitive as it could be, but it gets the job done… either way, it’s still the volume leader of the class. Reputation seems to go a long way.
@Vic Why do I like the Elantra the least? Drive one, you’ll be presented with cheap, cheap, and more cheap. Cheap materials inside and out, flimsy everything (doors, trunk, interior components). They do look good, though… but the worst part of the Elantra is the driving experience. It’s flimsy, not connected, or engaging in the least. In two words — drive one 🙂
So then compare it to the Verano which do you think is more engaging?
Which Malibu, 2012 or 2013?
Is the 2012 Malibu being caried over for fleet sales…
