Vehicle sales at General Motors Korea were down 5.49 percent in May of 2012, with GM’s Korean subsidiary selling a total of 67,571 units compared to 71,497 during the same time frame a year ago.
While sales of (Chevrolet) models for the Korean Domestic market increased 4.85 percent from 12,403 in May 2011 to 13,005 in May 2012, units earmarked for export dropped 7.6 percent from 59,094 to 54,566.
GM Korea exports its locally-built vehicles mostly to Europe, although the upcoming Buick Encore — which is planned for assembly in Incheon, South Korea — will be exported to the U.S. market. Recently, speculative reports ventured that GM would abandon its manufacturing operations in Korea, instead choosing to move production to its under-utilized plants in Europe. This, however, does not appear to be the case thanks to statements to the contrary from GM Korea chief Sergio Rocha. The operating unit recently began selling the Chevy Corvette in its domestic market thanks to new developments surrounding the free trade agreement with America.
