Chevy Camaro and Corvette To Pace Return Of Motorsports To Detroit

This weekend marks the official renaissance of tier 1 motorsports events in the D Town thanks to the Grand-Am 200 at Belle Isle on Saturday and the Chevrolet Indy Grand Prix on Sunday. And it’s only fitting that sports cars from the Bow Tie brand serve as pace cars for both events: the beastly Camaro ZL1 will pace the Grand-Am while the gorgeous Corvette 427 Convertible will do so for the Grand Prix.

And despite the grief we give The General for not having any affordable performance vehicles in its lineup, we can’t ignore the fact that the Camaro and Corvette made up 33 percent of all performance cars sold in 2011, or that the Camaro led the Mustang in sales by 13 percent through April of 2012. And that’s not even mentioning that Corvette sales are 39 percent higher than its nearest (although questionable) competitor, the Porsche 911.

But as much we love cars and everything that’s involved in bringing them to astounding levels of speed, it’s healthy to watch the races for yourself, if not in person then at least from the comfort of your television (or other device, that is). To watch the races and their respective Chevy pace cars, tune in to SPEED TV on Saturday at 5pm ET or your local ABS network for pretty much the entire weekend. Luckily, our own Manoli Katakis will be on site at both events to enjoy the proceedings. Anything you want to ask Manny if you can’t attend yourself? Let us know in the comments!

  1. Is that Camaro a stock color?

  2. It looks like auga blue metallic. In 2010 it sold less than 5000. And it was not offered in the 2011 Camaro to bad I think it was the best color the Camaro had.

    1. The presser from GM said that the vehicles had a few minor modifications; the color was likely one of them.

    2. Main Wayne. Watching the race now. I also thought the color was Aqua blue metallic. The PaceCar looks more blue. Would like to see that as a production color!
