Opel Builds 500,000th Insignia

Opel has manufactured half a million Insignias — with the 500,000th unit being a white Sports Tourer wagon rolling off the Rüsselsheim plant in Germany.

“Right from the start we knew that the Insignia was a true winner,” said Plant Director Axel Scheiben.

Since making its market premier in 2008, the Epsilon II-based Insignia has earned more than 50 national and international prizes such as the coveted “Car of The Year Award” in 2009. Of particular interest, however, is the production distribution of the Insignia, with 40 percent of the nameplate being Sports Tourers (wagons), 40 percent hatchbacks, and only the remaining 20 percent sedans — a stark contrast to the sedan-centric consumption patterns seen in the United States.

Now, what do you think is in store for the mid-cycle refresh of the popular midsized car?

    1. From what I been reading the manufacturing plants are not fully utilized and that’s part of the problem.

      1. Precisely correct. In order for a plant to break even, it needs to have a utilization rate of around 80%.

  3. … of course us Americans are pretty much forced to be “sedan-centric” by default. I would love to see a Regal wagon at the local Buick dealer. The sedan is seriously lacking in rear headroom.

  4. Ya I wouldn’t mind trading in the HHR or the Bu Maxx for a Regal Wagon when the timing is right…
