Majority Of OnStar FMV Buyers Are Toyota, Ford Owners

OnStar FMV (For My Vehicle), the mirror available to owners of vehicles that are not equipped with OnStar, is being installed most often in 2011 model year vehicles, followed by 2007 and 2012. But what’s perhaps even more surprising is the fact that Toyota owners are responsible for 15.6 percent of FMV sales, while Ford owners make up 12 percent of all FMV purchases. In addition, more than 30 percent of those Ford customers have vehicles equipped with the SYNC infotainment system.

As of February 2012, OnStar FMV has sold more than 20,000 units and the mirror is compatible with more than 100 million vehicles on the road today. This makes us ask whether the FMV has the potential to bring non-GM drivers into the GM fold to take advantage of the full OnStar experience. What do you think?

  1. 20,000 / 1,000,000 = 2%. This sounds to me like the majority, 98%, are not interested in the ‘On-Star’ expierence…

    1. Considering that less than 1% of all car buyers make any kind of aftermarket mods to their vehicles, 2% is actually respectable. In addition, this is a product + service that requires a one-time fee for the mirror itself (and installation) and then an ongoing monthly or yearly fee for the service — making it somewhat of a big-ticket aftermarket addition.

Outside of financial-related matters, why anyone would not want to have OnStar is beyond me.

  2. I would and seriously thinking about installing on my 83 Malibu Wagon when I return from serving in Korea! I really like the Blue tooth feature and GSP locator if someone stole my ride. And of course the fast response if God forbid I was in a accident.
