Headquartered in Port Melbourne, Melbourne, Australia, GM Holden Ltd, generally shortened to Holden, was founded in 1856 as a saddlery maker and began producing automobiles in 1908. The company became a wholly-owned subsidiary of General Motors in 1931. All Australian-built Holden vehicles are produced at Elizabeth in South Australia, while engines are made at the Fishermans Bend plant in Port Melbourne, Victoria. GM Authority recommended that the Chevy brand replace Holden in Australia, but Australians didn’t take well to that suggestion.
