Corvette Racing Goes 1-2 At Laguna Seca

After a grueling six hours of roller-coaster-like elevation changes and turns around the 2.238-mile, 11-turn circuit, Corvette Racing nabbed a 1-2 finished at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. The win builds off the team’s victory at Long Beach a month ago in California. Oliver Gavin and Tommy Milner, who piloted the No. 4 Compuware Corvette C6.R found themselves at the top of the podium, while Jan Magnussen and Antonio Garcia, piloting the sister No. 3 Compuware Corvette C6.R, took second.

Corvette Racing was able to fend off the BMW team, which finished 3-4 behind the ‘Vettes.

The duo of Gavin and Milner are now in first place in the GT driver standings and Corvette Racing now leads the manufacturers’ championship after three of 10 rounds. The next race for the team is the FIA World Endurance Championship’s 24 Hours of Le Mans on June 16-17

  1. I was called out the other day – a poster pointed out that nearly every commentary I enter here has some sort of EV-EREV-PHEV-ending oil dependence slant. He’s absolutely right, and here’s this one…

Jan Magnussen is a beast. The guy could race Little Red Ryder wagons and win. He’s won just about every class of race just about everywhere in the world he’s raced. Congrats to Milner and Gavin in the victory, and Magnussen and Garcia for second place – inching closer to that coveted manufacturer’s championship! Watching “The Grid” on SPEED Channel the other day and they did a piece on Magnussen and his personal life back home in Germany. Just so happens Jan drives an Opel Ampera for his personal ride – the German marque’s version of the Volt. Good going Jan – he slams ‘Vettes to podiums on Sunday, drives emissions-free and foreign oil stingy Mon-Fri.!!! 🙂

Here’s hoping the 24 Hours du Lemans is much of the same!

BMW strains to catch up to Volt and all they have to date are some test EVs leased to human guinea pigs here in the ‘States. They’ve hired former GM lead Volt engineer Frank Weber to lead their EV/PHEV charge ( sorry for the pun ). They sure have some nice shiney interesting uber-expensive prototype/concepts but nothing real customers can afford and drive on public roads and park in their garages to keep.

Do I hear anybody knockin’ Volt now?

Volt news in a C6 ‘Vette racing story – didn’t think I could do it, did’ja? LOL

  2. Thanks, guys. I know I’m preachin’ to the choir here — But it’s amazing to see what is happening in this exciting time of human history and personal motivation, isn’t it?

Jan Magnussen, a Dane in Germany criss-crossing the globe racing an American speed tour de force with a U.S. team he describes as “family”! His son is currently climbing the ladder in open wheel racing and when you become a father – you do start to think about the world being a better – more advanced place for your heirs to live in for their future.

Can’t you close your eyes and see Jan electrically zipping down the Autobahn or Autostrada at 101 in his Ampera? And the irony that BMW can’t keep up with him in his ‘Vette on the track nor catch up to him futuristically driving around in his EREV using no to little oil – a stealthy weapon in the true battle to become independent of foreign oil sharks and domestic oil barons.

Volt/Ampera is affordable to many ( not all ). BMW’s efforts, even when they do appear for real – not so much. Teslas are incredible, but the models S and X will not be cars a middle to upper-middle class person can afford either. If I really squint and look out my window I can see future all electric races where Teslas race with BMWs , Fords and GMs. Perhaps a 300 mile race with no fuel stops, or interchangeable battery packs lifted into cars in split seconds in the pits……….
