General Motors saw a rejuvenating sales month in March 2012, selling 231,052 vehicles in the United States, up 12 percent year over year. In total, GM passenger car sales increased 22 percent, with small and compact car sales up a combined 62 percent. Compact crossover sales were up 47 percent and mid-size car sales were up 38 percent. Full-size pickup sales were up 14 percent. However, it was Chevrolet and GMC picking up the slack from Buick and Cadillac, which were down again this month compared to last year. Through March, 608,320 GM vehicles were sold in 2012, currently pacing 2.7 percent higher than last year.
Buick Sales Sink 16.3 Percent
Every Buick model was down from March 2011, besides the Verano, which sold 2,497 units. That essentially cancels out the hole left behind from the Lucerne, but couldn’t make up for the ground lost by the Regal, Enclave and LaCrosse. However, retail sales for Buick did increase 6 percent. In total, Buick accumulated 13,105 unit sales for March 2012.

Cadillac Dips 13.4 Percent
Despite the CTS selling 4,485 units, a 14.9 percent gain from March 2011, Cadillac still dropped as a whole, selling 10,537 units. It’s the same story as it has been since the discontinuation of the DTS and STS, but with the launch of the XTS just around the corner, and the ATS just on the horizon, this trend should be stopping soon.

Chevrolet Grows 16.8 Percent
Sales of the Malibu have taken off, selling 23,887 units — a 53.6 percent gain from last year. The Cruze was also impressive with 21,607 sales, growing 19.9 percent. The Silverado still remained Chevy’s best seller, at 36,491 units — a gain of 12.1 percent. The biggest grower for the month, however, was by far and away the Volt. The Volt sold a personal best 2,289 units, a 276.5 percent gain from March 2011. The Sonic also had its best month ever. In total, Chevy managed a healthy 173,073 sales for March 2012.

GMC Gains 12.2 Percent
Selling 34,337 units in March, GMC had a positive sales month, with a strong showing from the Terrain, Sierra and… *wait for it* the Savanna. Acadia sales dipped 12 percent for the month, and we’re guessing due to anticipation of the 2013 model set to launch this fall.
