Chevrolet dealers received an email on March, 2 from Russel Clark, Director of Marketing for Chevrolet small cars, small utilities and performance cars, informing them that all shipments of the 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 produced to date are being withheld for a “quality assessment” and will subsequently delay delivery to dealers. Additionally, ZL1 production at the Oshawa, Ontario plant has ceased for the time being.
**Update:
ZL1 production has not been suspended, but the quality assessment is still ongoing. However, this is not abnormal, as this usually happens with most GM vehicle launches. Additionally, all of Oshawa Assembly was shutdown last week. This shutdown was planned, and there is another week-long shutdown scheduled from March 26 through April 1. There was also another planned shutdown a few weeks ago. These stoppages were due to planned updates to the line.
However, sources inform us that Dealer Order Submission Process (DOSP) dates didn’t account for these planned shutdowns. And as a result, the DOSP dates need to be re-aligned, and orders placed last week are going to be delivered based on the rescheduling.Â
The letter didn’t get into detail about what exactly is going on, but it did mention that the suspension/assessment could last “a few more weeks.” Since this morning, we have learned that it may be a software-related issue. Which in fact has resulted in a particular Camaro ZL1 delivery in Texas to be shipped back to the plant. There’s probably more where that came from.
So, what we have here are two things happening at once. Quality control, and a possible DOSP hiccup.
So, if you’re one of the lucky ones ready and willing to obtain the $54,495 track monster, you may have to wait until the months get a little warmer — which isn’t exactly a bad thing. In the meantime, we will be investigating the reason for the sudden hold. You can read the letter just below.

Update on 2012 Camaro ZL1 Shipments and DOSPThe purpose of this note is to provide you with an update on 2012 Camaro ZL1 production and vehicle shipment plans.
All Camaro ZL1 models produced to date are currently being held by General Motors for a quality assessment. At this moment, the duration of the hold is undetermined, and may last a few more weeks. As soon as the hold is cleared, a note will be sent to all dealers to advise that 2012 Camaro ZL1 shipments are underway.
Because of the hold, the upcoming Dealer Order Submission Process (DOSP) cycle that was to be dedicated to ZL1 is being postponed. This DOSP cycle was scheduled to start this Thursday, March 1, 2012, and continues through Tuesday, March 6, 2012. A new date for this DOSP cycle will be provided in the near future.
We regret to have to undertake these actions, especially given the high anticipation for the new Camaro ZL1. We ask for your patience and will continue to keep you posted on any developments regarding production and vehicle shipments from Oshawa.
Sincerely,
Russell M. Clark

It’s Skynet!
Ya that or chemtrails….
The Americans bail out GM and they make the Camaro Zl1 in Canada..
What a slap in the face.. Bring the production back to AMERICA….
How about this deal Scott – You guys build the Camaro and we’ll build the Cruze up here.
Canada helped with some money and they own about 12% of GM.
Whoopie! 12%
How much money did the American’s help with?
That support should bring production back to America..
Easier said than done, Scott. Where exactly would you suggest?
What should Canada get for putting money into an American company? Nothing?
Build and finance create a Canadian car manufacturer put up billions and we will make the cars he in the USA..
Then when it is mismanaged have the Canadian people bail it out and then send the car that will help revive It to the USA to manufacturer it.
What does all the latest have anything to do with the shipments or halting of production on a ZL1?
geez….
If you gave the article a once-over, you’ll notice that production is not being halted. It was last week, but that was due to a retooling shutdown, not a quality issue. The quality issue is a different thing entirely, and is not affecting ZL1 production.
Holy shi, er, crap. Canada has a long history of producing GM & Ford vehicles, why in the heck should it be so offensive all of a sudden? Let’s see… close down a plant in Canada to build a plant in the U.S. just to produce a vehicle here.
For all of you brainiacs bitching about the taxpayer’s money being wasted, how does the above scenario make better use of “your” funds? Listen. GM owes the U.S. Government, nor the taxpayers of this nation one damn cent. The cash loans were repaid in full, the cash reserve provided for trouble was returned and the balance of the loan was repaid with company stock during the IPO.
We’re all technically shareholders in GM now, so try to look at these things from a business perspective. The government can sell its stock any time it wants to get cash out, at that time we’ll all get a refund of the money that was provided during the bailout, right? LOL, that’s rich. We’ll see none of it because it isn’t “our” money any longer once we’re taxed.
In fact, how is this different from paying rent to a landlord, then complaining about the company he buys his cigarettes from.
ya and how do you think the workers at the factory in oshawa would feel about this i dont think they’ed be to happy. anyways where does gm build the biggest selling cars U.S. and who buys a large amount of those Canadians so really your argument is null
