Opel has announced that it will officially enter its first-ever alternative energy vehicle rally by entering six Ampera extended range electric vehicles in the “Alternative Energy” heat of Rally Monte Carlo. The event fires up on March 22, in Annecy-le-Vieux, Clermont-Ferrand and Lugano and finishes three days later in the capital of Monaco, the fabulous city of Monte Carlo.
In order to participate in the alternative energy rally, vehicles must have a maximum of 115g/km CO2 emissions. The point of the rally is to cover a certain distance, maintain a constant speed and use as little energy as possible. It’s not like the field is barren, either, as some 150 vehicles are expected to take part this year.

Electric is sexy. I think it’s only a matter of time before many eyes are opened as racing seems to truly fuel attendence in the showroom.
I hope the Ampera used has different wheels and larger tires – and a slightly nicer racing paint job – nonethess, performance of any kind is tested to the max in various forms of competition and I think in a rallye situation the dual-mode character of Volt/Ampera will shine.
