GM Assembles 3 Millionth Ecotec Engine

It might not be as significant as, say, building 100 million small block V8 engines, but General Motors has in fact crossed the 3 million milestone with its Ecotec four-cylinder engines. And only 2.5 years ago, GM built its 2 millionth Ecotec.

Recently, GM invested $55 million into its Spring Hill Powertrain facility towards increasing the output of the plant to meet demand.  If your’re curious, the 3-millionth engine will power the all-new 2013 Chevrolet Malibu Eco, which means its of the 2.4-liter variety and is mated to GM’s eAssist mild hybrid system. Look for an all-new 2.5-liter block this summer that will make its debut in the base Malibu, and the Cadillac ATS.

  1. Ironically, Opel calls their 6 cylinders ECOTEC as well, even thought its the old school TT 2.8.

  2. It sure looks like the old Saturn 1.9L engine. What’s the difference?
