Cadillac Shows Off Cargo Capacity Of XTS, Crams 4 Golf Bags In Trunk

The 2013 Cadillac XTS may not have the underpinnings for a Mercedes-Benz S-Class fighter that the brand needs, but it could very well be the ideal vehicle for a game of golf. With 18 cubic feet of trunk space, retirees in Boca Raton, Florida finally have the car needed for the ideal foursome as the trunk will happily fit four golf bags. And with 40 inches of rear legroom, the XTS will preserve the knees of the old-timers well enough to have them lock up somewhere around the 12th hole instead of in the back seat.

Where was that picture taken?
“XTS’ country club credibility is on display at the Cadillac Championship at the Doral Golf Resort and Spa in Miami. With equipment provided by Callaway, four adults and four bags fit in the sedan with room to spare.”
sharp car!
I thought Cadillac was trying to get away from the “old man’s car” image
They are, think of the XTS as the last of the old gaurd, the last grandaddy Cadillac designed to be a stopgap vehicle to ease its traditional customers into the next generation of cadillac vehicles(ats and next gen cts). Expect the XTS to be discontinued in a couple of years, maybe before the arrival of the range topping caddy somewhere around 2017. Since its essentially based on the epilson platform, it didnt cost much to produce and I think its a really good addition to the lineup while Cadillac is in transition.
Its kind of like this , when dvds first came out, computers featured both drives, floppy and dvd, to make it easier for customers to start using dvds, then they slowly started fading out floppy till we reached the point where they are obsolete.
Makes sense I guess.
One thing I don’t get is why Gm seems to be ignoring a market. The elderly seem to have nowhere to turn. Oldsmobile was axed years ago, Cadillac has turned to sports-luxo, and Buick is becoming what Pontiac should have been.
Well, I wouldnt say ignoring the market, just not catering to it as much as they used to. I mean with the exception of the regal gs which should have been a pontiac, had pontiac still existed, GM has dedicated a whole brand to the elderly market. Every Buick model from the verano to the enclave is focused on the wealthy elderly who want a comfortable, bland, somewhat affordable family car.
True once the Cadillac XTS and SRX in its current form is gone, Cadillac, once a company dominated by Grandpas, will not have a car that someone like my neighborhood grandma would want. But I think this is the right step for Cadillac, you dont become standard of the world when your toughest competitor is a guzzied up toyota camry(lexus es) and the biggest concern of your customer is how comfortable the seat is, you be the best when you are forced to cater to a demanding group, a group that will dress your car down for the slightest hint of body roll, or reject your interior because it has gaps that are millimeter bigger than your competitors. Cadillac needs to be where Mercedes is now and where Cadillac once was, the ultimate status symbol, you dont get there by making cars for the elderly.
Plus Baby Boomers are group whose influence and purchasing power have been decling over the years, they are no longer the cash cows for companies they once were. Most Boomers are struggling to make payments not driving on the freeway with their A class motorhomes with a Cadillac seville fleetwood tied to the back as they once did. And while there is no hard evidence to back this up, my personal analysis of the generation that is turning elderly is rejecting their image, they want to feel young again, therefore more of the elderly are buying cars that they wanted in their youth but could not afford or buying cars that percieved to be a youthful car. How many camaros do you see driven by 80 something year olds? Anyway I think GMs strategy of Cadillac for performance and Buick for elderly is great and should pay off for them big time because they have the whole spectrum of the luxury market covered.
Funny because my brother-in-law just got rid of his Focus Hatch because his golf bag didn’t fit in the trunk. 🙂 I’ll tell him he can fit FOUR of them in this, whenever it comes out.
i don’t see why anyone would cater to the elderly. they don’t buy cars because they are looking for a “old persons car”. they buy what they perceive as nice comfortable and good value for the money. there are just as many “old people” driving Benzes, BMWs, and Lexus, as there are driving Buicks, Lincolns, and Caddys. none of the a fore mentioned brands are considered “old peoples cars”.
just like Pontiac was forced to realize in the 50s. you can’t sell a young man an old mans car, but you certainly can sell a old man a young mans car. that should always be the focus. old people will buy accordingly. besides, that’s a marketing dead end… literally.
