Cadillac SRX To Be Replaced By Alpha-Based Crossover

GM Authority has learned that the current Theta Premium-based Cadillac SRX will be replaced by an all-new crossover based on the Alpha platform. While the current SRX is a midsized CUV designed to primarily take on the Lexus RX, the new Alpha-based vehicle will be a compact crossover directly targeting the BMW X3, Mercedes-Benz GLK, Audi Q5, and Infiniti EX.
The new model, the name of which has not yet been determined by Cadillac, is one of four new Cadillacs based on the Alpha platform.
The GM Authority Take
The current-generation SRX is a great vehicle with even better styling. But its front-wheel drive platform castrates its sporting ability. Now, the current-generation SRX is selling well, but sales still lag behind its most direct competitor — the Lexus RX350. As such, we’d recommend giving Buick — the brand that’s most directly targeting Lexus customers — the current SRX architecture to make a proper RX beater. Call it Envision, if you will. But equip Cadillac with proper rear-wheel drive-based sporty crossovers to take on segment stalwarts from BMW, Benz, Audi, and Infiniti. At the end of the day, it’s BMW (and its overall performance-driving experience) that Cadillac has its its crosshairs — not Lexus. And while Lexus can pretend its playing BMW’s game with cars like the IS-F and the GS, it’s simply not even close in terms of being a sales leader in those segments.
We just hope that this new Caddy crossover isn’t in place of a wagon variant of the ATS. Additionally, this compact Alpha-based Caddy CUV should be complemented by a midsize version based on the upcoming all-new CTS to truly take on the BMW X5, Mercedes-Benz ML, and Infiniti FX, with a Lambda-based crossover and Escalade slotted above it.

Why bother coming out with Lambda if it is also a FWD platform? Base a midsize CUV on bigger Alpha (like next CTS) and continue with Escalade as FS SUV.
Yes! We have been begging GM to do this for years. Im glad their listening. I just hope the new Cadillac X3 competitor doesnt look like a elongated ATS, like the X3 does with the 3 series.
I think the lambda based crossover would be unneccessary, they just need a X3 competitor, X5 competitor, and the escalade.
Yes! Finally! Looks like they’ve been reading and listening to GM Authority 😉
Thanks Silent!
This is a good move. I view the current SRX as a nice Equinox – even though I know it’s not the same car. An ATS-based crossover with a rear-drive bias would be important to Cadillac building an arsenal of competitive luxury products to take on BMW, Lexus, Mercedes, Audi, etc.
Great!
yes!!!
I agree with the GMA take on the matter. Lock, stock and barrel…
Thats what I am talking about. More RWD for Cadillac. Now I want you to add that 8-speed transmission to the entire Caddy line up. Whats taking so long?
Question for you guys in the know…
Regarding size on the new Alpha crossover, I’ve been hearing a X1 and X3 tossed around a lot. Which is it? They’re two very different cars, and I’m inclined to believe it’s more of an X1 competitor that they’re looking at due to the potential growth in the segment.
Or are both on the way? I’ve also heard (disappointing) rumblings of an X1 competitor being FWD. Rumblings only, but rumblings nonetheless.
Another thing: If the SRX is moving to C1XX with the Acadia as another FWD lump, what exactly is going on in crossoverville at Cadillac?
