  1. In the words of Borat, itsa vary niceh.

Seriously, it appears to be the total package. Looks, quality and performance…it has it all.

    1. I agree scratch the regal gs I am saving all of my pennies on this pretty gal. Finally GM your giving the people what they ask for , almost lighter than a 3 and near 50/50 weight distribution oh my! This car is a definite WINNER.

  2. I stared at these pics of the ats in blk and the rest floating around and i have to say this car is F@#$!&% SIIIIIIIIIIICK!! Okay im done.

  3. It appears to be a vehicle of the automobile type, 4 wheels an engine to take one from point A to point B. Not bad, GM has finally created a vehicle that people will aspire to, they will save there money and buy a car worth owning.

  4. Overly styled vehicles can be polarizing. The ATS has very nice, clean lines (like most modern Audis). It should do and sell well. Nice engineering job on the weight, am hoping (with pretty good certainty) that they’ve nailed the chassis dynamics. Bring on the -V!

  5. It looks like the downsized CTS which isn`t a bad thing. Not as revolutionary as the `08 CTS though, but still clean and sporty. On the other hand its competitors like the A4 not to mention rice-bred offerings don`t look revolutionary.

  6. Looks like a winner. I’m a bit surprised there will 3 engine choices followed by a diesel and a V series. Right away I wonder: 1. How many sales will the ATS take from the CTS? 2. How many will they build/sell with the base 200 hp motor?

    Reply
    1. Just like the 3 Series and IS, most of the volume will probably reside with the base 2.5 ECOTEC. I expect the ATS to take most of the current CTS sedan sales. And when the ATS coupe and wagon come to market, those will take sales away from the current CTS line completely.

But since the next-gen CTS will move upmarket and become bigger, Cadillac will now be more appealing (and therefore attract) a new buyer: one who wants a sport compact lux and another who wants a sport midsize lux. With the current-gen CTS, the buyer was stuck in-between the two classes from a functionality and pricing perspectives.

      1. Alex….as usual I think you are correct about ATS…..I bet is sells very well. I am wondering what comes as standard….if it is as upscale and as fine as we think, I’ll plan on one….how much will it cost?????? 🙂

        Reply
        1. I’d expect it to start at $35,000 or thereabout for the base 2.5 4-banger. The 2.0 Turbo will probably be around $38,000 and the LFX V6 at $43,000. Add $1,500 on top of each for the all-wheel drive systems. Basically, 3-Series pricing.

          Reply
          1. I think its going to be a few thousand less than the 3 series.

            Reply
  7. Looks good lightweight but what’s only 90 ft.³ of interior space’s not a lot of room for American sized people

    Reply
    1. MW….I think most buyers of this car will probably be similar to BMW buyers and of average size….

      Reply
      1. Those taller than 6’5 need not apply. But that’s the case for most sporty and compact vehicles these days.

  8. This car should have never been launched in red; it does no justice to its lines. The car is much more dramatic is graphite.

I welcome the 3400 lb weight, beautiful interior with real wood, and the new CUE. Wishing the side body sculpting was slightly more dramatic; front end is spot on.

    Reply
    1. Agree about the colour and highy disagree with the front end.

This 3rd iteration of A&S looked good on the Ciel concept and the XTS, but for some reason it falls apart completely on the ATS. I HATE HATE GATE MATE RAKE FAKE the front fascia of the ATS. I would kick the headlights out of anger because they’re too small and drawn back too far to the A-pillar! What the hell were they thinking!!?

I mean I’m glad the ATS exists at all, I just can’t stand how awful the front is. An MCE better fix that mess or the 4th A&S can wash it off the next gen ATS because I’m getting sick the more I look at the front of the this car.

In V trim? Chrome won’t make that face pretty; we’ll leave the engine for another discussion.

    2. I love that front grill…the lighting also…..Very handsome…the rear is nicely sculpted also

  9. Red is definately the wrong color.

The CTS definately needs to move up and compete directly with the 5 series, if the ATS is going to be priced competively with the 3 series than it will be almost the same price as the CTS.

I know this not the right post to talk about this but I couldnt find the Malibu one.

What do guys think of the new Fusion?

I think its going to beat the hell out of the malibu and be neck in neck with the camry and altima. Its definately the best looking one out there i the segment, the new malibu looks good but its going to look dated in a few years. And the hybrid fusion is expected to get 47/44, thats very good, the standard fusion will get 33/37, that is the best fuel economy in its class. So the fusion already beat the malibu, camry in design and mpg and has not even been released, I think the malibu could have been the best but the car feels like it was rushed into production, they should have taken 6 more months and made a good car into the best car.

    Reply
  10. Yeah the `Bu needs better powertrain options to compete in the midsize segmentn 2.5 l with 190 hp is just not enough. So maybe the 2.0 turbo from the ATS will make its way under the Malibu hood..

    Reply
    1. Whoa… hold on a sec. Let’s take a step back and realize we’re talking about the mainstream midsize segment here — a segment in which the majority of buyers aren’t looking for performance or the fastest 0-60 times. We’re talking about a segment that, for the last 10 years, has been dominated by plain vanilla yet utilitarian vehicles like the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord.

The Malibu doesn’t need more power… or better styling. Those are near perfect, in my opinion, especially since a higher-performing 2.0 turbo offering is on its way for the ‘Bu. But neither power nor styling make this segment. If the Malibu needs anything, it’s a true two-mode hybrid system to take on the Camry Hybrid and new Fusion Hybrid, along with a dose of superb reliability to win the Consumer Reports recommendation.

Heck, the new Malibu’s 2.5 ECOTEC has 20+ more ponies than the base engine in the new Camry… and that’s a lot.

PS: the new Malibu will drive better than all of the vehicles in its class. The Fusion may tie with it, but I have never driven a better mainstream vehicle than the Malibu in the same class; the same goes for Cruze and Sonic.

      Reply
      1. I think the Malibu looks more muscular and the Fusion looks more sleek. But I will say this, the back of the Fusion just look like the Fiesta and that’s bad since the back end of the fiesta it looks boring IMO! I was hoping Ford would be a little more dramatic but that back end is just awkward. I do hope that maybe GM would put Voltec or Hybrid into the Malibu (not using the 1.4L engine though) to go against the Camry Hybrid or Fusion Hybrid.

        Reply
        1. Yea the back is not the greatest on the fusion, but I think its better than the malibu, as it looks like half camaro/ half something else(maybe cruze), the camaro lights are a nice touch, if they did a good job integrating them with the rest of the malibus design.

          Reply
          1. I think the styling on both cars are subjective but I think both looks way better than the refreshed Camry.

    1. Theyre right, it does look like a bunny!

I dont think a Buick looking like a bunny gives the feelings of elegeance and luxury that Buick should be striving through their designs.

Another one of the very numerous reasons this should be a chevy.

      1. I think it might just be the color as that color on the Encore(Im suspecting is a white diamond tricoat) looks more like a white bunny. But I guess they don’t wanna loose the Pontiac Vibe owners.

    1. What are you talking about, the ATS and Malibu are one of the most furthest apart cars in the GM lineup in every way?

      Reply
    2. Are you implying that the ATS is a rebadge of the Malibu? If so, you couldn’t be further off base. They’re totally different cars. One is FWD, the other is RWD or RWD-biased AWD.

      1. Correct again, Alex……ATS does not appear to be a Mailbu at all……..

  13. Well Alex, as you`driven the Malibu and you`re convinced that it drives so well it

    Reply
    1. Yes, I’m convinced the Malibu drives very well, best in class even. Here’s our first drive:

      http://gmauthority.com/blog/2011/12/2013-chevrolet-malibu-eco-the-first-drive/

I’ve personally driven the Cruze for the last year and have spent a great deal of time with the Sonic over the past 1.5 months. Chevy has the FWD dynamics down like nobody’s business. Better than Ford (Focus and Fiesta), which takes second in my book. And — assumption here — better than 2013 Fusion.

Either way, I don’t think people who buy these vehicles will notice these small details that excite enthusiasts like us. To them, it’s about price, safety, practicality, reliability… And not necessarily “stunner” looks (Fusion — I’m looking at you).

  14. Just saw the MKZ concept, even with low expectations it dissapointed, Cadillac and the the ATS are going to run all over Lincoln. I guess Akerson was right, they might as well sprinkle holy water because its over, almost feel sorry for ford, they spent a billion in lincoln but still seem to be doing the wrong things. I think 3 steps are required to began the Lincoln revival, and ford has done none of them. 2 are relatively easy, throw out MK naming and get rid of the gullwing grill. Everyone knows these 2 things are holding Lincoln back but like a stubborn child, Ford refuses to give up on them. The third step, a major one, is to stop basing Lincolns on Fords, as the CTS showed, only a Lincoln-only platform will be successfull. Build that suberb platform and put a midsize sedan and midsize crossover on it. Just that would set Lincoln on the path to greatness. An additional step would be to bring back the continental and make it a range topping 100k s-class killer. Im sure Ford is capable of and resourceful enough to take the above steps, why they wont do them, I dont know.

Oh and if I was Ford, I would take Lincoln to the performance side and not “soft” luxury but the above steps would be required in both cases.

I know this is not a Ford site but I had to get that out 🙂

  15. oh.. pressed “enter” too early, I mean it`s great that the Malibu drives so well, yet I`d be glad to see that it`s a segment leader, even in terms of power.

P.S. With all this downsizing ( in the mainstream segments ) are we going to end up in another ” Malaise”era?

  16. The proportions of the rear of the car give the impression to me that the rear tire is smaller than the front. Its obviously not, but the styling (possibly the close location of the door seam and the large panel above and behind the wheelwell) give off the illusion of a small rear tire. That is the only downside I see on it, but if I owned this, I’d get tired of it. Everything else seems well executed to me.

  17. But then is there a possible of a Cadillac Crossover smaller than the SRX to go against the X3 though?

    Reply
    1. There needs to be… and it should be derived off the ATS. Then, the next-gen SRX could be the CUV variant of the CTS. And world balance would be restored 🙂

  18. because I did saw somewhere that I think GM is rumored to build a X3 fighter on the Alpha chasis though and slots under the SRX

  19. Looked at the ATS interior during Industry Days. Conclusion: nice….but not a serious threat to either BMW 3 Series or Audi A4. Interior is not as nicely crafted as Audi. CUE sytem looks very nice but will have to reserve judgement until it is tested out (remember iDrive). If this was supposed to be the 3 Series killer I don’t believe it quite lives up to the reputation that preceeded the reveal. Hopefully, driving dynamics will be as good. But I am dubious. The base ATS is about 150 lbs heavier with a less powerful engine. BMW offers up Stop-Start, brake regen, electric water pump, clutched A/C, 8 speed auto for improved fuel economy and more power to the wheels. I will wait for the side-by-side real world tests to make final judgement.

    Reply
    1. Well, it’s a segment Caddy needs to be in. And the ATS is a good base to start with. Now it’s a matter of catching up in the horse race feature-by-feature. I, for one, would argue that most 3 Series shoppers don’t care/know about the features/specifications you mentioned, except for the transmission and stop/start — which are noticeable features.

      Reply
      1. Alex, I agree with your assessment about not knowing/caring about certain features.

when ever i ride with a friend with a new (insert luxury make of choice here) they are woefully ignorant about even the most commonly known features ir attributes about their cars. I feel by and large the Luxury market is driven almost entirely by pretension and image.

The average BMW owner could care less that the car is a great driving car, or has a awesome autobahn tunes turbo inline 6. All that matters for most is those 3 letters BMW. I remember when i drive first was introduced. I’d ask friends or people with the latest 5 or 7 series what they thought of it, and they would say “what” or “what do you mean i drive”. SMH

        1. Alex and jz: To comment on your comments…

I think if Cadillac is to be successful, they need to do more than ‘catch-up’ feature by feature, they need to lead. You probably meant that.

The other thing about ‘most’ BMW and M-B buyers is that they are followers. They are buying for status as jzEllis mentioned in his last paragraph. The game changers are the enthusiasts who DO focus on those details. Those are the ones who can change the perception, because they are the ones whose perception can be changed. The whole CTS-V – Nurburgring was a step change in Caddilac’s image. Being leaders is what changes the game. If our premium brand doesn’t sweat the small stuff, how can we expect to be competitive? Caddilac is heading in the right direction. They just need to execute fully in all areas of the automotive experience and do it consistently.

  20. I would never buy this car, to small (whats the point of a sedan if no-one can actually fit in the rear?) although I’d happily take it as a coupe. But I can’t wait for the driving reviews! This car is supposed to be sharing it’s architecture with the next Camaro! so my fingers are crossed!
