Hagerty Predicts Buick Regal GS, Chevy Camaro ZL1 To Be Future Classics

When predicting what will be considered a valued collectible some 25+ years from now, it’s easy to see cars like the McLeran MP4-12C and Bentley Mulsanne making the list. But what of cars that currently sticker well below the prices of these hand-built masterpieces? What if they’re priced under $100,000? Now things get interesting. And the classic car afficinados at Hagerty Insurance think they know at least ten for under that price.
Hagerty lists the 580-horsepower Chevy Camaro ZL1 as No. 7 on the list, snugly between the Porsche 911 and Nissan GT-R Black Edition. And while the fire-breathing Chevy is a no-brainer for such an enumaration, chances are next to nobody saw the Buick Regal GS at number one, just above the Ford Mustang Boss 302 Leguna Seca. You can see the list for yourself by opening the press release below.
Is there a car that didn’t make the list that you feel should be included?

I don’t see the link to the press release.
There isn’t a link… just a button. Does it not work for you?
The Camaro is a no brainer , But it’s nice to see a buick on the list wouldn’t have been that 5 years ago
I think Hagerty is either getting ahead of themselves OR they are speaking of the wrong Regal GS. The current car is nice, but the original Regal, or more appropriately the GNX, is already a classic! For this Regal GS to be in the same league it has to be mind-bogglingly fast and VERY wrong. In other words, it needs over 300hp from the 2.0L turbo , AWD, and cost about $30k. Impossible, right? Well…didn’t I say it had to be wrong?!?
I don’t think power is a necessary determinant of a car’s ability to become a classic, but rather a short supply and a forum of engrossing demand.
I think what Hagerty is predicting is the rarity/availablity of these cars. I have commented before that I don’t think the current Buick Regal is long for the NA market? I may be wrong, but I just can’t see the point of having it and the Verano so close together? I also think that the new ATS is going to take sales from the higher end turbo and GS versions? A 2012 GS with premium paint, wheels, roof and navigation lists for over $39K!
You’re spot on. I think the Regal will eventually go away and the Buick lineup will consist of the Verano (compact), LaCrosse (midsize) and an as-of-yet-unnamed full-sized sedan. The Regal has been selling less than 2,000 copies a month since its introduction… pretty low volume, especially given the low price point and three variants (2.4, turbo, GS).
Some sales numbers for January, where the Regal is down 20%:

And like Manoli wrote several months ago, the ATS will do everything that the Regal does, but better. What’s the point of the Regal then?
Yes, kind of a shame about the Regal. Personally I like the car quite a bit and there are some great deals out there on lightly used 2011’s. I’ve seen as low as $24K for a T07 w/10,000 miles! A lot of car for that $.
The ATS does appear to be a winner. I think a key factor is the focused approach. Very simple – the target is the 3 series, PERIOD. As an enthusiast, I like that, but it also makes it easier to understand for the “clueless masses”.
I own a 2013 GS and I like it very much but I don’t see these becoming a collector car or bringing in big money in the future.
