Have You Seen GM’s Stirring Billboards?

You may have seen these floating around Uncle Internet before. But guess what? We’ve got the lowdown on what, where, when, and why there were.

For starters, these are real billboards posted by GM on the infamous Woodward Ave. during the Woodward Dream Cruise. The billboards change every year; for 2011, GM had two billboards in Ferndale — one of a ’54 Corvette and one of a 2012 Centennial Edition ZR1.

These have been so popular that GM has made them available for sale on ChevyMall.com (just search for “Woodward” to find the posters available for sale). Currently, the most popular poster, according to Chevy Mall sales, is “They Don’t Write Songs about Volvos” featuring the iconic Corvette Split Window. One can purchase a poster (or two… or more) for a mere $20 for a 24 by 10 inch print or $90 for a framed poster.

  3. And this is what worries me; that Chevy can only rope people into the showroom by playing the nostalgia card.

The newest car in those ads is a 1970 Chevelle.

To me, it subtelly speaks to the false idea that Chevy doesn’t think that what they make today is any better than cars they made 42 years ago.

    1. Well, we have to look at these in context: the billboards were put together to appear during the Woodward Dream Cruise. Many participants, audience members, and passer-bys fit the demographic to remember these vehicles. So they’re appealing to them.

By itself, Chevy is doing just fine (as we’ll see with tomorrow’s sales numbers).

  10. Some instant classics here. “They don’t write songs about Volvos,” LOL! I lived the 50s as a teenager, and still have a pretty 56 Bel Air hardtop. I refuse to grow up.
