Five Chevys Make Top Ten List Of Best Selling Vehicles Made By Detroit Three

With 2011 in the books, so are the year’s auto sales. And while GM plans to release its official numbers tomorrow, a report has emerged listing the top ten best selling cars made by the Detroit 3 automakers: GM, Ford Motor Company, and Chrysler. Of that list, five Chevrolet models can be found, with Chevy’s best selling model once again being the Silverado full-sized pickup. Americans love pickups.

Behind the Ford, Chevy and Ram trucks is the Chevy Cruze, followed immediately by the Malibu and Equinox. Rounding off the list is the long-in-tooth Impala fleet queen. Humorously, the Ford Escape outsold all of them.

  1. I wouldn’t be surprised if the escape outsold it since they’re putting a lot of rebates.

    1. @Vic rebates are one thing. A sound lineup and market strategy is another. Ford has all three. What will happen once the new Escape and new Edge are out? That duo will absolutely crush the Equinox.

      1. Ford is taking a gamble with the Escape. They are trying to fix a formula that isn’t broken.

        1. This is true. Although I believe the new Escape will sell even in greater volumes than the outgoing model.

  2. Whats sad is that Ford sold about 23,000 more cars than GM when you combine the sales of the models in the top ten, with one less model, and I bet they made more money on them too, I mean the Escape and Fusion are so outdated that there cash cows, even with alot of incentives. and I bet impala sales are only so high because of fleet. I think Ford won 2011 though I think 2012 is going to be GMs, especially with Cadillac ATS and XTS.

    1. That’s because Ford seems to have a real solid market strategy. Lincoln isn’t doing so well, but it’s about to get relaunched.

Ford, however, is where it’s at: there is a clear distinction between their vehicles, which occupy most, if not all, classes. Take the Escape — which is definitively in the compact space in terms of price, features/options, and size vs. the Equinox, which is in no-man’s land.

Chevy has the Gamma-based compact CUV on the way, but it seems to have that “stupid factor” of being on a smaller platform than it should.

At the end of the day, Ford keeps it simple and has invested tons or money into high tech. GM is not keeping it simple but is also investing heavily in high tech. Seems to me that simple is the differentiating factor, which is why Ford outsells Chevy consistently.

      1. But then that doesn’t apply to the Focus and Expedition though.

        1. What doesn’t apply to the Focus and Expedition?

          1. I don’t know if it deals but what I was talking about the sales of the Expedition and Focus.

            1. Sales of the Focus were relatively weak becuase of supply constraints but should catch up or even surpass the cruze in the next couple of months, and I believe that the Explorer/Expedition sales are higher than the Tahoe/Suburban sales though GM probably makes more money on the duo then Ford.

            2. December 2011 numbers:
              Cruze: 16,675
              Focus: 14,281

*The Focus is still hamstrung by production constraints.

              Expedition: 4,212
              Tahoe: 8,430
              Suburban: 5,930

Chevy has always been stronger in full-sized SUV sales than Ford. But Ford outsells Chevy and GMC in full-sized trucks.

              1. December 2011:

                Explorer(13.842) + Expedition(4.212) = 18,054

                Tahoe(8.430) + Suburban(5.930) = 14,360

Despite shifting to a unibody platform, it is still a full size suv and marketed as such as well.

Yea I expect the Focus to outsell the cruze in 2012, though the cruze took full advandate of the supply problems of its rivals and was released at the perfect time.

                1. I think you’re suppose to use Expedition and Expedition EL

                  1. Yes, in the order of size and segment:
                    Traverse vs. Explorer (crossovers)
Tahoe vs. Expedition (Body on frame SUVs)
Suburban vs. Expedition EL (Body on frame SUVs)

                    1. Yea youre right if you just consider body on frame full size suvs.

    1. Just wait until the new Escape, that shares nothing mechanically with the one you’re experiencing the issues with 🙂

    2. Yea the current escape is so outdated and I think its roots can be traced to a 90s mazda platform, im very suprised its still selling so well, I bet the new escape will be the segment leader and handidly crush the CRV.

      1. I hope the new Escape is a runaway success. Ford is doing everything right… Not sure how they could go wrong.
