Those of you out there who have been eyeing the progress of the Chevrolet Spark EV will be happy to know that the chemistry of the battery is reportedly less temperamental than what we see in the Chevrolet Volt. The difference is that the battery pack for the Spark (supplied by A123 Systems) will utilize a phosphate-based lithium ion composition, which is a newer but less volatile setup to the Volt’s battery, which is less volatile than gasoline.

I kinda want one of these…
I’ll never forget looking at a 1920’s International pickup. The gas tank WAS the seat, just upholstered. I asked my dad what the hell the designers were thinking, and he replied “That way you’re halfway to heaven before you die.” We need to keep in mind that NOTHING is safe 100% of the time, and gasoline is far more unstable than lithium just like Manoli said.
