As the final hours of 2011 tick away, we are left in reflection. A lot happened this year in the General Motors news world, as we were there every step of the way. There were some big stories throughout the year, such as Chevrolet’s centennial year, the rise of Buick, breathtaking concepts such as the Cadillac Ciel, new achievements in infotainment technology such as Cadillac CUE, and much more.
Of course, GM had its fair share of not-so-good publicity, such as the Chevy Volt fire incident, and the gradual decline of the price of its stock. But each of these stories only mean so much to certain people. So we turn to you, our readers, to let us know what you felt were the most significant GM news stories of 2011? On that note, we wish you all a Happy New Year, and to please be safe!

I don’t know the biggest story. I know the smallest ( the one no one has ever heard about) April 21 2010 GM pays back government loans 5 years early.
Biggest GM story of 2011? Best news was when they said they are BRINGING BACK PONTIAC!!
Got some bad news about that….and the nature of Santa and the Tooth fairy.
Coolest GM brand=PONTIAC…period.
“The Pontiac of X’s”
Doesn’t really have the same cache as Cadillac…or the history, or the presence, or (more recently) the prospects.
No, Pontiac was far from “the coolest” GM brand.
lol!
Manoli drives a CTS V, best story by far AND the best photo shoot I’ve seeen on GMA..
Hey Grawdaddy, make some sense and maybe we can have a conversation.
Okay.
The Cruze is one powertrain swap away from becoming a perfomance compact that the G5 could have been.
The Regal outshines and outperforms the G6; it’s turbo versions are certainly more desireable. And if more downmarket affordable cars are wanted, there is always the Bu’.
The Grand Prix never mattered when it was on the way out. It was always oversold by the Impala even when offered the same LS4 block.
The forthcoming Alpha and it’s subsequent varations will let everyone forget about the G8.
The MKII Theta’s already cover and thoughly overlap whatever remained of the Torrent.
I don’t even want to mention the nameplate “G3” in the same sentence as the Sonic, but I had to for the purposes of this discussion.
And don’t use the tired argument that RWD would make the difference. It didn’t save Pontiac sales with the G8 and the Solstice, and many consumers don’t care. I mean nobody cared about the Cobat’s drivetrain when it laid waste to the Nurburgring. But who cares, it was just a FWD econobox, right?
Bluntly, I see no reason to revive or reserect the Pontiac brand. Not only would it be too costly to do so, but then I ask “what would be the point?”
Surely you’re not going to say “sportiness” and “excitment”. Please, that hasn’t been at Pontiac in over 20 years. It was a tired and weak effort back than and managed to pull Pontiac though the 80’s.
Stuff like the T1000, Astre and the Phoenix were never sporty, no, those products were made OUT OF NESSESITY to keep Pontiac relevent. Where was that oh so important “exceitment” when it mattered to their volume products; like the G5 or the G3?
Yeah, find that excitement, and then tell me how GM should have dumped millions into a chronic money-losing brand to develop cars that wouldn’t have saved Pontiac and certainly wouldn’t have been exciting.
It is unwise to have a romantic attachment to the brand as if it were on the cusp of enjoying new golden age. The business model simply wasn’t workable or sustainable given what has happened in the last 5 years.
I think the best GM news story was their overall sales increase this year. Way to go GM!
My Right Brain says Sonic RS (STILL hating the name though!) or Buick Regal GS.
The Left Brain says Cruze diesel or Colorado diesel (but if they put drums on the rear of either I will surely give in to the Right Side of the Force!)
