General Motors is showing off a new 6.2-liter toy at this year’s SEMA show, and it’s not a concept. Yes, consumers will actually be able to purchase the LS376/525 crate engine, which comes from the factory with 525 horsepower at 6,300 RPM and 489 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,400 RPM. The engine is designated as part number 19259233 and carries a suggested retail price of $8,937.50.

Interesting how the Europeans always make fun of the US for having such large engines for such little power, but this is a 5.3 with 525hp. That’s 99hp/ Liter, with OHV, port injection, 2 valves a cylinder, and a crossplane crank.
I guess it’s not so out of date after all.
The Europeans are just jealous, because of taxes on engine displacent it would be impractical to say the least for Euro manufacturers to build lightweight highly efficient large displacement V8’s like the LS or Hemi, I do’nt know but I do’nt think there are anny OHV big bore low rpm light aircraft engines produced in Europe either.
By the way, is’nt a 376ci engine a 6.2 liter, also I wonder if it will be available in a C.A.R.B. legal kit like the 5.3, 525bhp would make one hell of a HOT ROD out of some old IROC 3rd gen Camaro or even an S-10 shortbed.
It’s not jealously. It’s a combination of the aforementioned taxation, and the differences in approach to engine design…especally when the intended auidence is concerened (mid-market vs. upper market). That, and power density of undersquare engines vs. oversquare engines.
As for their approaches, if yank V8 engine design was a philosophical dialouge, it would be visceral, written entirely in blood, and would liberate more people to the wonderful drug called acessable power – second only to an AK47. The present state of US economic and taxation allows for such an engine for the time being.
So does anyone wanna get high? 🙂
I wish I had the 8K+ to buy this. I’d drop it in my Sidekick in a heartbeat!!
my 69 will be getting this LS3 in front of a six speed this year!

Leave liters for soda bottles. American motors are CUBIC INCHES. The LS3 happens to be 378 C.I. of American power.
