SEMA 2011: Chevy Ricky Carmichael Sonic Concept (Video)

Along with the handfull of other Sonics that will be present on the showroom floor, Chevrolet will be displaying a one-off design study influenced by NASCAR driver and Motocross great Ricky Carmichael.

In the video we see some tasteful neon green graphics on awesome blue pearlized satin black paint, and a roof rack accompanied by a mountain bike and wakeboard. Matching the color scheme on the body are the wheels, which are black with neon green bordering. The car is also sporting a Z-Spec body kit and smoked lamp housings.

The interior matches the exterior appointments as well with a dark green/jet black leather-trimmed instrument panel and lime green piping and stitching on the doors. The presser also states that the sound system and shifter are unique to the vehicle.

Mechanically, the car features a lowered suspension kit, performance brakes and a high-flow exhaust system that all look to aid the stock performance of the Sonic’s turbocharged 1.4L Ecotec four pot. If only we could get that roof rack as an option…

    1. It looks to extreme for the main stream. However, an optional roof rack would be perfect.

    1. I think it looks great, too. But why not offer the roof rack (at least for the hatch)? It would bring more value and utility to the car.

  4. I’m looking into purchasing the new Sonic Hatchback but can’t find anyone who will install a bike rack on it. If they did it for Ricky Carmichael…
I even called Thule and spoke to a rep who said they don’t have a bike rack fitted for the Sonic. I can’t buy the car if it won’t transport my bikes. Any word if GM is working on fitting the Sonic with an aftermarket roof rack or hitch receiver?

    1. We’ve told GM and will continue to tell GM that the Sonic needs a bike rack as well as a roof rack as options.

  5. Thanks for the info, Manoli. Please post any updates you get. Uhaul offered to do a custom hitch for free if I drop the car off in Tempe, AZ for 2-3 days. Unfortunately, that’s a little too far. I’ve got a guy at Rack n’ Road who’s going to make some calls regarding a possible hitch I found on etrailer.com. Just seems like more of a hassle than it should be. I’ll post any info I find.

  6. I contacted GM and they informed me that Chevrolet will be introducing a Mont Blanc bike rack for the Sonic. At this time, it is scheduled to be available in January. I also found rear receiver hitches available online at Curt hitches (sedan model only) and on etrailer.com for both the sedan and hatchback.
