C7 Corvette ZR1 Illustrated, Reportedly Dead Accurate

The next generation Corvette has been a vehicle shrouded in mystery. Not helping are the multitude of publications (us included) that have unrelentingly speculated on just what we will see when the car launches in 2013. But with the latest revelation from Jalopnik, a lot of that speculation looks to be hushed for good. Somehow, the site got a hold of photos revealing the base C7 and C7 ZR1 totally nude, and rendered some photos for Corvette fans across the world to drool over.

As evident from the photos, there will not be a split rear window a la Corvette Stingray to be found here. Moving on, the new base ‘Vette will be revealed roughly a year from now at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show in January of 2013. But the rendered photos that Jalopnik drew up portray the ZR1-spec model, and are confirmed by several of their sources as incredibly accurate. And while the Jalops haven’t disclosed much about the C7’s interior, our own sources tell us that the car will feature a heavy digital influence, utilizing multiple LCD displays — kind of like the Cadillac CUE system. As for rumors of a high-revving twin-turbo V8 in development for the car, that remains to be confirmed by our sources.

  1. Looks good, but at first glance, in my mind, an image of my friends 2001 celica came up, that cant be a good thing.

    1. I see some Ferrari 599 in the front. The rear looks like they molded the rear fascia of a Camaro to fit a Vette’s profile.

  2. Manoli this has some of the lines correct for the next gen vette, but you have to remember that this project has many facets to it including car show cars which this somewhat is accurate the final version has only been seen by a few key people with some outside people making comments on some design directions of individual areas of design not the whole vehicle. some times we put info out that may be ideas but it is just to gauge reaction and for the most part this is the idea concerning these renderings. you will see more mules out and about soon. none have made it to milford yet for highspeed testing. hope this helps, by the way 5.5 twin is the engine. of the future.

    1. jd, I feel like Jalopnik did this on GM’s behalf to gauge consumer reaction, and so far it seems to be a mixed bag from people. They also claim that two C7 models are IVER testing right now. Thanks for the tip on the 5.5!

I just hope all of those air vents and scoops are functional this time around.

  3. Strange, I’m getting strong GTR vibes from the rear of the car. Not nessicailly a bad thing – it certainly would be nice to see the C7 without a giantic one-piece glass hatch. The rear-quarter window certainly helps it out. I’m not sure what to think of the vents over the rear strut tower. I’ll wait until the rear fascia debuts: I expect the 4 seperate tailights to remain.

As for the front, the hood vents are a bit distracting – covering them up with my thumb does some to lessen their influence.

Still getting GTR vibes the more I look at it.

However, I’m not opposed to a TT5.5 engine. If it can walk the walk…

  4. Oh no… I have been a Corvette fan since I was around 12, and owned 2 C3’s. I have been waiting for the C7 as long as I can remember as a sports car to aspire to own.
The car looks like it probably is the real deal. The square tailights, angled tail lights, Ferrari styling cues, smaller posterior, rear windows, evolutionary design…Every worthwhile rumor on the web seems to be present in this version of the C7.
I was hoping it would have been a cleaned up version of the Stingray concept car. That car was a Corvette. This is an amalgamation of too many people’s version of where the car design should be going. Some Ferrari 599, some R32, a little Camaro. Terrible.
I hate to say it, but if this is the new Corvette, I am no longer a fan.
    A sad day…

  5. Not a fan at all. Maybe better without the ZL1 treatment. Not a fan of the Camaro like tail lamps. Corvette deserves it’s own image.

  6. I think it looks great, love that rear glass and quarter panel glass look.

  7. Remember this is the ZR1 so the base will be toned down a bit. Probably won’t have the functional hood vents. I LOVE this. I think this will appeal to younger buyers and it slaps the 911 across the face in terms of style. Only a few things that need to be cleaned up. The front overhang is a bit too long and the camaro style headlamps need to go. That spoiler needs to be toned down too. Maybe it’s just the drawing but this seems a bit long to me. Overall, I love it. It lookes much nastier than the current ZR1. Settle down though we have a while before we see the actual car

  8. A few hours later, and this rendering of a ZR1 (should it be true) gets the Grawdaddy seal of approval.

I like it, and if it’s prodcution, it should shake off the Corvettes “dated, mid-life crisis, mid-west carpet salesman end of year reward” image that has creeped on it for the last decade.

Mind you, I reseve the right to revoke my seal of approval if the interior doesn’t look like it belongs in 2011.

  9. While I like the drawings, it seems just a bit too convenient that Jalopnik gets to see “in the metal” pictures of the production a car that has yet to even be shown in concept form. And they didn’t bother with the “standard” Corvette, they went for the ZR-1 that won’t go on sale for at least a year after the initial C7 introduction.

I agree with many of the comments already here. The front/hood is eerily reminiscent of the the last Toyota Celica. The greenhouse looks very Ferrari. The taillights look like stylized Camaro lenses, yet why wouldn’t the Corvette draw on its own heritage for something as key as this feature? Even the front egg crate grille is a bit too Camaro derivative.

I think I’ll remain a bit skeptical as to the voracity of these drawings as they sound like an informal test marketing ahead of final design approval. Some of the features may be deliberately “incorrect” just to get people excited or riled up, depending on your perspective. @JD is usually spot on about these things and I appreciate his point of view. I’m excited about the 5.5 L twin turbo power plant.

  10. I’m wondering about the rear loovers extractors in the finders over the rear wheel ? maybe a wind tunnel find?
someone is always going to find something in a design that looks like something used on another car, all but the tail end are a GO for me!

  11. I like that is looks to be very much still a C6 in design, just freshened up. But please don’t put those “new Malibu” taillights on it! They look like crap. Improve the performance and throw everything into vastly improving the interior and you would do wonders for Corvette sales. It already had an almost perfect 50/50 weight balance. Why fix what isn’t broken?? Dig the style, HATE THE REAR END!

  13. That ass end is hideous. The circular taillights are a Corvette thing, why ruin it? The whole exterior screams of trying too hard. The Vette should be sleek and sexy, not look like a matchbox car. I hope GM’s version doesn’t look like this.

  14. Looks a garbage Made in Japan wannabe sports car. Corvette always had it’s own look that made it stand out among all other cars. This is very uncorvette like. It is plain ugly, cheap looking like the rest of Made in Japan sports cars.

  15. i agree with everyone about the rear end but i like everything else and i dont see japanese styling anywhere if anything its a little too american (rear end should be on new camaro not corvette) remember they’re trying to globalize the brand and what better to do that then a corvette that not only kicks ass in performance but also in styling

  16. Haven’t been much of a Corvette fan since the Mako design of the late sixties, and I wasn’t into my teens at that point. Think it’s been downright ugly the last number of iterations. This new 7th Gen is hardly ground-breaking, but at least it’s modern, rakish and sexy. Should have avoided the Camaro tail lights though.

  18. The new design is not what the Corvette deserves regarding the c7 coupe. The convertable is a beautiful car.The down side is the new car interior is no better than previos c6.The c6 actually had better much roomier interior. The dash is like a video game. The gauges are smaller and harder to see and are squared off.The gauges resemble a Buick. The gauges on the c6 were absolutely beautiful big bold and classic. The c7 gauges are not.The interior of the c7 is smaller. If you are a large person 250 pounder you will be squashed in between the center console and the drivers side door. Its worse than flying coach in center seat. In addition another problem is the center arm rest has been raied too high. The c6 had neither of these problems. These problems I personally encountered after driving the c7 while going on a test drive at my local dealership. I OWN A ZR1 C6 2013 .My ZR1 is a phenomenal Corvette. YOU CANNOT DRIVE A C6ZR1 THEN DRIVE A C7 AND BE SATISFIED WITH THE C7.The c7 has no power or acceleration when take off.The two cars dont compare.I am so happy that I purchased the c6 ZR1 its got brute horse power in all gears.Lots of interior room great sound system and smokes 96 percent of all cars on the road. After the test drive the c7 was a dissapointment I told sales rep I was glad to get back to my c6 ZR1.I feel the C6ZR1 will become a very sought after Corvette in years to come due to the fact the c7 just does not compete with it.Even if Chev makes a new C7ZR1 it will still have cramped interior and small gauges and will not be much faster. The cost of 800 plus hp is not in Chev price point.i love the C6ZR1 body style it looks stealth. You see very few C6ZR1 Corvettes anywhere. When the public gets tired of the c7 body style they will be on a fast track to find the C6 Zr1 And C6 Z06.When driving the c7 you have to down shift to get power the c6 ZR1 you dont. The two cars are worlds appart.

    1. Only an idiot would compare the output of the fastest C6 to the base C7. Sorry if you couldn’t read/couldn’t fit in the cabin of the Stingray. You’re probably not the demographic. Thanks for playing.

      1. Chev has made all these claims that the C7 is all that. Its not and if the c7zr1 is going to make the grade they need to improve the comfort level inside the cabin.Bring back the classic big round gauges.Lose the video style Buick dash. The C6ZR1 will soar in value because the style is better and people will rethink new style as over.

SIMPLY SUPERIOR IN EVERY CONCEIVABLE MEASURE. The glowing reviews and above sales expectations C7 sales numbers confirm this.

  19. Personally, I was a HATER of the C6 looks when it first came out, BUT, now own a C6 Z06 because I thought it was the most ULTIMATE Corvette ever built for street use…… ( Z06 is more than enough, BUT, the ZR-1 is too much over the top for a street car… IMO) .. till now!!
I’ve ridden in and drove the C7…. and if you don’t fit, or sit in it and only read gauges, and like the C6 better, my C6 Z06 will be on the market when the new Z06 becomes available!!
As with my view on the first C6’s was overstated in my mind, technology became a factor in changing it… as has the technology of the C7 won me over!
Just hope the value of my Z06 goes UP and doesn’t drop before I get my hands on this Awesome car!

  20. TGmme c6 zr1 is much better looking than the c7 zo6 the price alone puts it in an elite category.
The c6 zr1 is a one of a kind car and will comand big bucks in the future.Especially if it is never produced again. The c7 zo6 is not good enough for c6 zr1 owners to back pettle to its lesser sibling. The horse power will have to be up over 800 before I would even consider buying another. The zo6 or zo7 will never have the c6 zr1 status period.Price dominates and the C6zr1 was more expensive and that seperates the haves and the have nots. The c7 has video style gauges seats are no better than c6.Dont comment unless you own a c6zr1 ,it will turn more heads than any zo6 any day.Gm will have to produce more horse power to get c6zr1 buyers to let go of there zr1s.

  21. DenMor the average person can’t even afford a BMW.The 2013 ZR1 will not drop in price like you think. Most people that comment on the 2013 ZR1 have never driven one.
You can’t walk into a dealership and test drive one there were very few made .
Dealerships even the managers can’t drive them.So how are all these people commenting. The new c7 Zo6 is not any faster then the 2013 ZR1 most people who buy them can’t even drive them properly.12 horse power is not going to make a difference.
THE 2013 ZR1 holds the Status Symbol.
With the right driver the C6ZR1 will smoke the new Z06.The ZR1 C6 2013 Still Looks better than the C7 Zo6 period. The 2013 ZR1 Can be boosted over 1200 hp simple, the new c7 z06 cannot.

  22. The c6 zr1 will always hold top value especially 2013 model. The new c7 zo6 is not any better than the c6 ZR1.In fact C6ZR1 is more comfortable and does not have the Camaro style taillights. With the experienced driver the C6ZR1 will smoke the C7Zo6.
There is not enough horsepower to make a C6ZR1 owner to jump ship to C7Z06.
There are more after market horse power up grades for the C6ZR1 1000 hp no problem. So even if Gm decides to make the rear engine c 8zr1 it’s obsolete.

  23. 99 percent of all people who comment on the C6ZR1 have never driven one.
They speculate and dream. If you did not drive up in an expensive car to a Chevrolet dealer in the past they would not let you test drive one.
So WHERE DO ALL THEIR UN FOUNDED COMMENTS COME FROM.
IF YOU WERE TO ASK THE PERSON TO RIGHT OR LEFT OF YOU IF THEY KNOW OF ONE FREIND THEY HAVE WHO OWNS A 2013 ZR1 THEY WOULD SAY NO.
I THINK MY POINT SETTLES THAT.

  24. Why would Motortrend.com put goodbye ZR1 AND ANYBODY ELSE.The C7ZO6 has 12 horsepower more than the C6ZR1 SO WHAT.
Unless your a professional driver you are not going to know the difference.
Most people don’t have the ability to drive either car to anywhere near it’s potential.
A year prior the c6 zr1 was beyond nervana.
ALL THE SUDDEN C6ZR1 HAS FELL FROM GRACE.WHO PAID MOTORTREND.COM TO SAY THIS?
