GM has had its fair share of innovative strange packaging ideas for its cars. The last generation of minivans (like the Chevy Uplander and company) was supposed to look like an SUV and this Malibu Maxx emerged as a half-hatch-half-wagon with wanna-be-sedan styling. And apparently, the Maxx will actually stop you in your tracks! Man how we don’t miss the Old GM of yore, or in this case, of the last decade.
Enjoy this 2005 commercial while you tell us the strangest styling exercise you’ve seen on a GM vehicle.

Ha, funny… i love mine, fun to drive… People always ask why there is a sunroof in the back, I just say “I dont know”.
Major complaint; interior cloth is very weak.
Interior is very functional though…
Likes; 3.5 V6 makes this car enjoyable to drive…
Paid $12,000 with 24,000 miles cant beat that, trouble free driving…has 74,000 now…
Nice man! Those 3.5s are indestructible! I have a buddy who works at a GM shop and he’s done things to that motor I wouldn’t even want to discuss on here. It has 380,000+ miles on it now… granted, it squaks and rattles heavily, but still runs.
The strantest styling was in the Aztec
weren’t they were based on Opel Vector
The same platform developed 4 the 9-3 saab, assuming it was Opel Vectra platform, looked at G6s (same platform) and HHR’s.
Correct, except for the HHR — that’s on the Delta I.
I miss the old GM
Market domination and reletively dated technology made for maintanance costs to rival that of walking and cycleing.
The new GM is doing lots more actual manufacturing in North America, so I am greatfull, do’nt get me wrong.
It’s just that I miss the old empire, with locomotives, and aircrafts and telecom.
I don’t get the whole, GM was garbage, government motors club of folks… First question have you driven a GM product in the last 12 to 15 years. My other GM ride has almost 250 thousand miles, all with basic general maintenance… Ok not all GM cars have had a great reputation, but folks we are not in the 80s anymore… Some people like the practicality and in some cases the affordability of GM products, not all of us can afford Mercedes.
I don’t get them either. And not only have they most likely not drive a GM product made in the last decade, they probably haven’t driven ANY new car in that timeframe. Either that, or they’re ignorant. Which is worse? 🙂
I am not one of those detractors, I just miss the old empire thats all, you know EMD and locomotives sold all over the world, the friendly rivalry with GE, that stuff; locomotives would look so green and earth friendly in todays world, GM made rail equipment untill yesterday, and now rail is sexy, but EMD is a maintanace co in private hands, and Detroit diesel belongs to Mercedies Benz. Im sad about that.
I am not one of those detractors the only non GM cars ive ever owned were a Jetta diesel and a decomitioned Ford Fairmont police car, and my Dad , a lifelong Ford fanatic bought me the police car. GM cars in the 1980’s cost nothing to run even with sensors and accuators desighned with 50,000mi life Toyota’s of the era had parts made by Denso desighned for the 200,000mile life of the car but they cost manny times as much as their Delco and Bosch counterparts, in the late 90’s Toyota started to use Delco components to cut maintanance costs. That’s just one example of the old GM not being broken, even being a model for others to follow.
Yupp, I hear you loud and clear. I, too, miss the days of the industrial-grade products like locomotives and busses. Unfortunately, there’s no hope of them getting back into that field… 🙁
