RPO Central: 2012 Chevrolet Equinox With Desirable Changes

For the 2012 model year, the Chevy Equinox will lose two colors (Cyber Gray Metallic and Cardinal Red Metallic), get a new set of optional 18″ chrome-clad wheels, and add the Chevy MyLink infotainment system. More importantly, the Equinox will make certain previously-optional features standard, such as Bluetooth phone connectivity (standard on all trim levels, even 1LS) and the rear vision camera (standard on 1LT). Also of importance is the addition of the forward collision alert and lane departure warning systems.

But not all changes are for the better in the ever-popular Equinox. For instance, the trailering package will no longer be offered — and neither will the rear infotainment package (which seems to have disappeared in favor of the new MyLink infotainment system). Unfortunately, a rear screen for the back-seat passengers isn’t yet part of the MyLink package.

And speaking of unfortunate events — the 2012 Equinox doesn’t get any upgrades in the powertrain department… which is a shame, given that the 2012 Ford Edge will offer a 2.0 liter turbo-charged (EcoBoost) engine that will make more torque and almost as much horsepower as the optional 3.0 liter LF1 V6 in the Equinox (and GMC Terrain) while delivering the same (impressive) 30 MPG on the highway. At the very least, let’s just hope GM can keep up with demand for the Theta-based compact/midsize CUV — given that demand stays at the same insanely-high level as during 2010 and 2011.

  1. wait so how come equinox get the forward collisioning and Terrain doesnt?

    Reply
    1. The Terrain actually does get the Forward Collision Alert and Lane Departure Warning system for 2012. We just haven’t published our RPO Central segment yet. Coming soon 🙂

      Reply
  2. the terrain gets the forward collision system don’t worry.

Also, terrain comes standard now for 2012 with bluetooth and steering wheel controls, plus the 7″ Mylink screen.

    Reply
    1. Are you sure about the standard Bluetooth for the 2012 Terrain? The Order Sheet doesn’t show it.

PS: The GMC version of Chevy MyLink is IntelliLink

      Reply
      1. Terrain does come with bluetooth standard on all trim levels, the exception is that it is not included if OnStar is deleted from the base SLE1 on Fleet orders.

        Reply
        1. Oh yes, that’s totally right. I forgot that was the case for the 2011 Terrain.

          Reply
  3. well the Terrain page for the RPO codes it didn’t show up either on the GM site too. But then again the Edge doesn’t really compete with the Equinox since the Nox is more of the CRV competitor with a size of Ford Edge though… Because I though the Terrain was more of towards Edge, Murano, etc competitor?? And another point I thought of is that GM can maybe fit the 2.0L turbo on the Regal CXL but wouldn’t the fuel economy drop since turbo regal are only 18/29??

    Reply
    1. To be honest, the Equinox and Terrain are midsizers; so is the Edge. The Kia Sportage, Hyundai Tucson, and Ford Escape are compacts. So the Equinox (and the Terrain — they’re the same size) compete with the Edge and Murano more directly… especially now that the Edge has a four-cylinder option for the 2012 model year (the Murano is 3.5 V6 only).

The takeaway for me here is that GM does not play in the compact CUV space — which is rather unfortunate given the growth in that segment. And their smallest CUVs — the Equinox/Terrain — don’t offer a third row. The next-gen Edge, current Kia Sorento, and next-gen Hyundai Santa-Fe will all offer a 3rd row!

      Reply
  4. or they’re trying to do the Sonic-based crossover to go head to head with the CRV but then it’s kinda too small since it’s sorta Juke-sized car…. but I thought the Santa-Fe already offer the third row?? But then again (just curious) would you think that putting a third row and a 2.0 liter from the regal a good idea??

    Reply
    1. Yeah, a crossover based on the Sonic (Gamma II architecture) would be more in line with something like the Juke… here’s my dream Chevy crossover lineup:
      1) Compact crossover based on the Cruze (Delta platform) — 2 rows, youthful and sporty.
      – top competitors: Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage, Ford Escape, VW Tiguan, Nissan Rogue, etc.
      2) Midsize crossover based on the Malibu (Epsilon platform) — 2 rows with an optional 3rd row. Family-oriented.
      – top competitors: Kia Sorento, next-gen Hyundai Santa-Fe, Toyota Highlander, next-gen Ford Edge, Nissan Murano, Honda Pilot
      3) Full-size crossover (based on Super Epsilon or on Lambda) — 3 rows standard. Family-oriented.
      – Basically, this is the current Traverse.

I think a 2.0 turbo would work well in the compact and midsize CUVs outlined above… especially considering that the 2.0 ECOTEC turbo in the Regal GS makes a whopping 270 hp and 295 lb.-ft. of torque — which is almost as much as the 3.6L LLT V6 in the 2008-2010 Chevy Traverse!

      Reply
  5. but then isn’t it the 2.0 liter on Regal about 18/29?

    Reply
    1. Sure is. But if Ford can eek out 30 MPG out of its 2.0 EcoBoost in the Edge, so can GM. Especially given the fact that the Edge is kind of a fatty 🙂

      Reply
  6. isn’t it the Theta platform based on the Epsilon??

    Reply
    1. Not really. The Lambda is closer to the Epsilon than the Theta, which is kind of its own thing. We spoke about this with Sam Abuelsamid of AutoBlog fame on an earlier episode of GM Authority Weekly. I think it was this episode.

  9. The Nox seems to compete in a much larger arena than mentioned, a fully loaded Nox is a serious chunk of change nearly 40 grand. It is by far one of t he best designed vehicles holisticaly in GM line up… I dare say an upscale buyer would be willing to check out a well apointed Nox…

  10. Guess again, the Red Cardinal color will be back for 2012 just no date yet when it will be released. Wish they had more information on it because the colors for ’12 are dismal. Why 2 blacks? Another color would have been better than 2 blacks. JMHO>

    Reply
    1. Lee, the RPO changes are what is being supplied by GM to dealers. There’s not “guess” work involved. In any event, the colors may be changed, deleted, or added any time throughout the manufacturing process… so I hope you’re right!

      Reply
  11. I’m just not sure on the platform because the last time I compared is that the Lambda’s length are about the same size as a Buick Lucerne just to let you guys to understand how long the Lambdas are and like the Theta compare to my G6 is about the same length I thought.

    Reply
    1. The length is irrelevant in this case. The Lucerne rides on an old-school W/H body platform; it’s practically a modified body-on-frame. The Lambda is closer to the Epsilon, although it has many unique characteristics of its own. Theta is its own thing and is not related to anything currently produced by The General; if anything, it’s not even close to an Epsilon architecture (such as a G6/Malibu).

  18. For 2012, I noted that the chrome appearance package will no longer be available on the 2LT. I believe that the rear bumper warning sensors were part of that package in 2011. For 2012, will it be possible to order rear bumper warning sensors as a separate option on the 2LT?

  19. Will the 2012 Equinox have rear climate controls?

    Reply
    1. Nope.

      Reply
  20. I think that’s the main concern for me about both the Equinox and Terrain is that they both don’t have the rear climate controls because it gets really hot in hot summer days.

    Reply
    1. No kiddin’! That’s the problem when you have one crossover trying to fill the shoes of a compact CUV (which usually don’t have these vents) in price and fuel eco and a midsize CUV in comfort.

      Reply
  21. Since buying mine and using it for a while, I still have to say that the #1 thing that needs improving in the nox is rear visibility, no other SUV has such diminished vision out of the side back windows with those W-I-D-E pillars, all that’s left is a tiny triangle of a window. Have to rely on side mirrors and rear backup cam which is great in 2012. Kind of jealous of the other SUV’s that don’t have that pillar issue.

Following up colors: the Crystal Red Metallic on Traverses will replace Cardinal Red that comes straight from one of the Equinox heads at GM. That color will be available in April as they want to get it out before spring and warm weather car shopping.

Alex, you have a great forum going. Hope GM hears the comments from everyone…

    1. Thanks for the complements, Lee — we try!

Re rearward visibility — I guess that’s the price you pay for a cool design. But I agree that it should be better.

Crystal Red sounds nice! I hope that more colors are added/shared with the Cruze line as well as time goes on.

  23. Hello, Will the 2012 Equinox still have a 2LT trim level? It appears some web sites are saying that 2012 will feature only three trim levels: LS, LT and LTZ. Others say there are still four trims, with 2LT included.

    Reply
    1. Yupp, it will. The way it works is LS, 1LT, 2LT, and LTZ. Some, rather obscurely, refer to 1LT and 2LT collectively as LT.

  24. I bought a 2011, Cardinal Red, 4 cyl, FWD, LTZ, with jet black leather, sunroof, and the Audio system with Navigation/Infotainment and Rear Entertainment. I had the factory, 17″ wheels chromed, and they look great. I love it!

It’s a nice change from my 2008 Vette, and my 2007 Silverado Ext Cab. The Equinox is easy on fuel, to park, to get in and out of, it’s really comfortable, quiet, fun to drive, and it looks great. Oh yeah, the nav works great, and the sound system kicks (_!_).

If you’re thinking about getting a Equinox, do it! This car is so nice, I’d buy it twice.

  25. I understand that Cardinal Red and Cyber Grey Metallic were discontinued due to damage at the factory in Japan that makes the paint.

My daughter is in the process of buying a 2012 LT2,. AWD, 4 cyl. with back up camera but not navigation as Garmin is a lot better option for her money which is not unlimited. I am concerned as to possible problems with other parts from Japan, contamination for one thing and availability of replacement parts for another.

Do you have any similar concerns?
Do you think the configuration of AWD with 4 cyl. is adequate. Should she get navigation with the Equinox?
And finally, sticker says 70% US but says nothing of other 30% Do you know what makes up the other 30%. Thanks.

    Reply
    1. Hey Len,

You’re right, certain metallic colors were temporarily discontinued due to the Japan natural disasters. However, I haven’t thought of the contamination issue as it relates to parts and components — that’s an interesting question. I don’t think GM (or any other responsible automaker) would continue to source parts that are in some way dangerous to the well-being of humans/drivers/passengers of its vehicles. Either way, that’s an interesting question.

The AWD and the 4-cyl are fine, but don’t expect the Equinox to be fast in any way with that powertrain. The V6 is definitely better in terms of acceleration, but not as good on fuel economy. So I’d recommend that if speed and acceleration isn’t a primary goal, stick with the 4 cylinder.

As far as the navigation system, I say don’t get anything and use the built-in and standard OnStar Directions package instead. I’ve owned GM and non-GM vehicles before with and without navigation, and can honestly say that my 2011 Cruze without navi is the best when it comes to navigation systems thanks to OnStar.

Just hit the blue OnStar button, tell the representative the address/destination, and have them send it down to your vehicle — which then routes you using voice as well as the Driver Information Center (in the display between the speedometer and the tach) and/or the center stack display (the monochrome one). Best of all is that you don’t need to stop and input an address or play around with the nav system at all by using OnStar, since it’s hands free.

And in the case that you don’t want to talk to an OnStar representative, you also have the ability to send the address to your vehicle using the OnStar Virtual Advisor from Google Maps or MapQuest. Best part? It’s not an either/or solution — whether you choose to get the color screen nav or not, you still get OnStar free for the first 6 months and then a small fee after that.

PS: the Equinox is built in Canada, so I’d expect that the other 30% of the parts is sources from there.

Cheers and let us know how it goes!

  27. I actually find it a little silly that I can’t built the 2012 Equinox or the Terrain with the Blind spot system and the Lane departure warning because I don’t see it as an option on the build your own section. For the Terrain I can’t even build one with the Navigation on the SLT2 since it doesn’t have it on the Build your own section as well. Right now I’m convincing my mother to get the Terrain with all the goodies since she says that her Cadillac kinda sucks no because when changing a light bulb on her SRX she has to take the whole bumper off along with lots of screws and it already cost her $35 dollars for dealer to replace it along with tires that are hard to find.

  28. It is nice tom hear that they are replacing the red with another red colour. I will in the market after April 2012 for another vehicle and when I read that the red was being dropped I changed my mind and was deciding on another make of vehicle. Now, that the red is being replaced with another red I will have to reconsider. I like the look of the EQ in that colour. Can’t wait to see one now.

  29. I am also having problems with using the bluetooth option on my 2012 Equinox LT1. The paring seems to work well but the system can’t seem to call out. It could be my phone. I also froze the radio when I last tried to pare. The on off button will not work along with the touch screen. The service person at the dealership removed the fuse but didn’t cure the problem.

  30. I just bought a 2012 Chevy Equinox not more than a week ago and am already having problems with it. My battery ran down so after being jump started I drove it to the dealership where they told me that one of the computers on the vehicle didn’t shut down and therefore ran down my battery. They updated it and told me that it shouldn’t happen again. Drove my car home (about 25 miles away) and the next morning it was dead again. What’s going on? The dealership told me that it’s been happening on the newer model Equinoxes. Any info? Needless to say I’m headed right back over to the dealership Monday morning!! This is ridiculous to be happening on a BRAND NEW CAR!

    Reply
    1. Hannah — you should demand that your dealer look into this more closely. This should not be happening on a brand new car. Ask them why, exactly, that computer didn’t turn off. Tell them to give you a loaner if they have to keep your ‘Nox for a few days. Let us know how it goes!

Alex, the stereo place can install a Nav system below the control in that cubby hole forward of the shifter.Of course the system would not in any way interfere with the Mylink Touchscreen, because I would insist that it didn’t. I am giving it serious consideration, because I want a built in system.

I have a portable Garmin, it interferes with Bluetooth even though I am connected to Bluetooth through Mylink.I had to unplug the Garmin to get Bluetooth to work

Don’t get me wrong most of the time it does take me to the right area. One time I try to go to a dealer that’s 40 min from where I live and I used Onstar and I kinda had an idea of where it is but they took right pass through where the dealer is located.

                    1. Errors happen sometimes — nothing is 100% perfect 100% of the time. But OnStar is more up-to-date and more accurate than most.

Put it up against a 3rd party unit and the error rate with OnStar will be significantly lower.

  33. My last email related to my pending delivery of the 2012 Nox LTZ. 2000 miles later; some things I love and a few disappointments.
The items I do like … All the additional electronic cool items, ride quality, driveability, drivers position, visibility and sound system all very positive.
Dislikes: big one here … No power assist pass seat … Under estimates fuel mileage, nothing close to the 24MPG claimed … I drive at 1800-2000 RPM on the open road=75-78 MPH. I drove from MPLS to MEM in one shot and 22.6 MPG was my best with resetting after each fill-up. Another big disappointment the tranny, it’s sluggish, mushy. I have a 2010 CTS 3.6 with the more uncivilized and very positive shifting 6 speed. I have not noticed the visibility concerns I’ve previously read, maybe a resolve the new multi-view mirrors added.
Even with the dislikes … This a great deal … The Nox is for my wife, she loves it. We are both happy with the LTZ package …
    Have a great day …

    1. Thanks for sharing, Nick.

If you want to get the best fuel eco, you’ll need to slow it down to 65 MPH — I found that to be the optimal speed to optimize fuel economy.

I hear you loud and clear about that tranny. It is sluggish and weak. I hope to see all-new powertrains in this thing in the next 2 years — especially the 3.6 LFX that replaced the 3.6 in many of GM’s vehicles, including your CTS for the 2012 model years.

I know that doesn’t help you, though.

      Cheers!

Definitely does not have good acceleration, my daughters Jeep Patriot 2.4 litre me thinks, has great acceleration(Not sure ..Anyway satisfied with the 1LT with the screen, backup camera etc.Still thinking of the aftermarket NAV system though, just a basic built in one.if affordable for what I would get..

A big problem is that I bought a on top dash Garmin, and it interferes with my built in Bluetooth.Anyone else have that problem. How much would it cost for a factory installed Nav system, I mean like having the dealer put one in.

The ride is quiet, the feel is different from my CRV, the turning radius id not as good as the CRV, and not so sure of the gas mileage, however it is not broken in yet.Poor rear view vision but have my mirrors correctly inline.

If anyone is interested there is only one way to inline your side mirrors and I know the way.Bragging of course.LOL

    1. David — you simply gotta try the OnStar nav that’s built in to every GM product — including the Equinox. Have you already tried it?

Don’t get an aftermarket system until you do!

      Reply
      1. I’ll second that.

The OnStar nav does all you need and is more convenient — since you don’t need to stop and plug in your destination. You simply call up a live person and they send the directions down to you — without you ever having to stop.

        Reply
  35. Do the directionns go directly to your screen

    Reply
    1. They sure do. Here’s the way it works:
      1. You press the blue OnStar button and tell the live operator where you want to go. They then send the directions down to your vehicle. The entire process takes a minute, if that — which is much faster than sitting in your driveway inputting the destination using a silly little keyboard.
      2. The directions appear in 2 places in your vehicle:
      – In the driver information center (between the speedo and tach), and/or
      – In the center console monitor
      The choice is yours here.
      3. You also get audible (voice-based) directions to complement the displays.

The directions are capable of being automatically updated in case you leave the planned route.

Oh, and the best part of OnStar, in my opinion, is the Virtual Advisor. It’s an automated system that you can send directions to from your computer.

So let’s say you’re on Google Maps looking at a route/address. You can simply send an address (directly from Google Maps) to the OnStar Virtual Advisor. Then, when you’re in the car, you press the “push to talk button” and say “Virtual Advisor” after the beep. It then asks you what you want to do — and you say “eNav Destination”. Then you can select from the routes that you sent in and get directions that way as well without speaking to a live operator.

  37. Alex, I just tried it, unfortunately the directions can not be sent to my display, why I do not know, they said go back to your dealer. The only thing I can get is voice turn by turn, I am not interested in that.>My display is large however it appears I do not have that function to display the Nav..And at over thirty dollars a month, after the trial period, I would not be interested.I am returning the Garmin to Cosco, as it interferes with my Bluetooth.

    1. Weird, that’s the first I’ve ever heard of the displaying not being able to display the directions.

Can you snap a photo and send it to me to alex [at] gmauthority [dot] com.

  38. Was a passenger in a 2011 Nox with a 4 cyl. recently. I was incredibly impressed, loved the ride the back seats were incredibly comfortable. I was really impressed with the 4 cyl’s power, I honestly thought it was the 6, my friend assured me it was a 4. Hands down would buy and recommend one of these.

  39. I live in Canada, checked with the dealer and was told the only time you will see a map on your display, is if you have a Nav system installed .I have the 7 inch screen, however I am not interested in voice turn by turn Navigation. It appears I have no choice but to go aftermarket, I like to see where I am going. Now another problem arises, where they wished to put the new bracket for the Nav system, there is the slot for the CD player. They took pics and are going to try and figure something out.

    1. David, I believe your dealer is incorrect. You won’t see a “map” per se — you will see little arrows and street names in the DIC (Driver Info Center) and on the center display. It’s not a full-fledged map, but it gets the “job” done.

  40. what would u recomend and why??? 2012 awd 4 cyl terrain or equinox

    Reply
    1. Simply depends on your preference of styling. Overall, the two are pretty much identical.

I like both equally well but think the Terrain is more masculine and looks best in darker colors, while the Equinox is more feminine.

  41. Hello! I’m a proud owner of 2012 1LT 4cyl AWD Equinox for about a month now; however, now that I have more time to go thru the manual and “play” with the electronics, I’m a little confused. Hopefully you can clarify for me!

I’ve been able to pair my smartphone with the hands free bluetooth feature without a problem, but I’m unable to upload contacts (I have a blackberry that prompts for “adding contacts” when it is plugged in via the USB port), and my ipod is not recognized when plugged in via the USB as well (which I’m aware that not all ipods will be recognized as stated in the manual).

When it comes to the other features of MyLink, I’m getting mixed information. For example, I want to use my pandora radio via my smartphone, but the only way I’ve been able to run that is if I use an auxillary cable. I’ve called customer service, and they told me MyLink was an upgrade option, but on the manufactuer websites its appearing as if its a standard, or its not listed as “MyLink” at all.

I’m more or less wondering how to obtain the MyLink feature thats described on Chevy’s website that advertises the 2012 Equinox and Volt as being the models with this new feature (and an explanation as to why my 2012 doesn’t have this). Thanks for your time and help! The tech-ee in me appreciates it!

    1. Hey Lauren. It’s probably best to start a new thread in the GM Authority Forum rather than here (in the comments of a blog post). A Forum thread would better allow us to follow the conversation and provide tips, etc. If you could, start a new discussion by clicking on “forum” at the very top of this page (next to “blog”).

      Cheers!

  43. Hello,

Just wondering how much better a 1LT is better than an LS if I had to choose between the two and the $2,000 price difference if the driver convenience package is included

    Reply
    1. Dan — are you referring to the 2012 or 2011? As far as I know, the Driver Convenience Package is not available on the 2012 LS anymore.

Mainly, however, the 1LT gets you:
      – Deep tinted glass
      – Roof rack side rails
      – Body-color, heated, outside mirrors with Integrated Blind Spot mirrors
      – Rear Vision Camera
      – Color Touch Radio with 7″ diagonal screen (aka Chevy MyLink)
      – Recessed overhead LED light to illuminate center console

The biggest feature here is the MyLink infotainment system. It’s worth the $2,000 alone. It will increase your monthly payments $20-40 a month (depending on terms, length of financial agreement, buy vs. lease, etc.), but it is so worth it — at least for me.

Would love to know what you think. Cheers!

  45. I have a question, the Equinox is built in Canada also, all I get for the tank capacity is 18,8 gallons, we deal in litres, so does anyone know what size our tank is taking into account the American gallon is smaller than a ,Imperial gallon.

    1. I think that makes for 71.17 liters… I wish the entire measurement system were in metric units. Would make everyone’s lives much simpler.

  47. The s plastic that is attached to the front bumper, is so flimsy that I nudged it slightly this morning and it broke off from the brackets. This is suppose to be an all weather SUV, however this plastic is so low in the front end that I doubt it would be any good in winter.I am not pleased, and now have to take it in to either get it fixed or replaced, and everyone knows what that would cost

    1. Yeah, that’s one of those questionable parts in my book. The piece helps decrease drag at high speeds — thus contributing to the high fuel economy of the car. You could surely have the dealer take it off, since it does get caught on steep driveways and such.

At the end of the day, I wonder how the high CAFE standards (and the race for high-as-heck fuel economy) will impact utility, design, and the “fun to drive” factor of vehicles. Based on stories like yours, it doesn’t look good.

PS: the Volt has a similar piece of plastic hanging from its bumper — and it’s really easy to scratch, even on surfaces that are not very steep.

      1. That would be the same thing with Lucerne

  48. Thanks for the info.I took it in and I am going to ensure that it is so well attached that it would actually have to break, before it would come off.The Collision fellow put a new screw in it and told me where to put more for it to be better secured.I will just have to be more careful or should I say aware.LOL

  51. Hi Alex,
Can you tell me if there is a way to brighten just the 7″ touch screen? I don’t think there is I have looked at the settings and can’t find it. I like to dim the interior lights when driving at nite but if you dim them a lot it dims the touch screen so you can’t see it? Thanks

  52. I have tried everything with that phone.I am taking it in Thursday to the Stereo place to see what he can do, along with a Nav system, unrelated to the 7 inch screen.

As for taking the piece off the bumper of the truck, what would it look like I wonder..

    Reply
    1. Let us know how it goes! I believe the culprit is your phone — it may be using some kind of funky Bluetooth stack (software).

Ripping off the lower lip should actually make the ‘Nox look better — as it will appear to have higher ground clearance in the front. But again, you’ll definitely be adding some drag to it, especially at high speeds.

  55. I want to know why when I took my 2010 Equinox in for a rear defroster recall, Chevy dealer where I bought it reprogram my cars computer? Now it don’t have enough power taking off to spin in gravel!! How can they change horsepower without my permission. And its a 3.0 Ltz. I am not happy.

    Reply
    1. Yeah you should really talk to the dealer about that. Don’t think they would do anything without telling you, though… unless there was some kind of a very rare transmission reprogramming bulletin that they took care of…

      1. Finally talked to GM spokman, said first 5 months car was buildt, to much horsepower and was dangerous and unsafe. They had the right to reprogram the car to be safe. It sucks and I don’t like the way went behind my back. Said cannot reprogram the way it was.

        1. They were tuned for too much power…. hmmm — that’s interesting.

          1. I’m beginning to think my car was a demo early May of 09, had it set up for power. Just show you what they can do and reprogram computer. Its still plenty of pep when the spark advance kicks in about 45-50 mph.

            1. That’s a whole lot of trouble for a dealer to go through… I’m not sure they would be able to come up with that kind of scheme, if you know what I mean 😉

      2. Thanks Alex, but the dealer where I bought the car didn’t know crap. All they said was we just punch a number in the computer GM gave them.

  56. I know how much power it had, I bought it new and it would scream!!! It was hard to hold in the road, going side to side and trying to correct it was the fun. It felt like was 300 hp, instead 265 hp. Now feels like 200 hp. No wonder they say 4 clyinder is about the same as 6 cly. I admit it would be unsafe for my wife if she ever floored it. I don’t think she could hold it. I just want my 265 hp back.

  57. I am looking for new small crossover SUV around $25K. I like equinox but I heard lot about engine problems for equinox 2010/2011 on internet forum.

I want a reliable car for next 5 to 8 year with average 12K/year average mileage.
Should I consider CRV as better choice or equinoc is also good ??

    Reply
    1. I don’t think you’ll find any problems with the Equinox, especially when it comes to engine or transmission issues since the powertrain is warranted for 8 years or 100,000 miles. And even after that, it’s an automatic and will be reliable. There aren’t any reliability problems with the Equinox’s engine or tranny as far as I know. Now, when it comes to power, it’s not the most powerful engine (4 or 6 cylinder). But the CR-V is not any better.

How long do you own equinox and how much mileage on it ? as I am looking equinox for log run (~100000 miles / 5-8 years )

    1. I don’t actually own an Equinox. But I did spend a good two weeks with one as part of GM’s media fleet.

The powertrain (engine and transmission) are warranted for 8 years/100,000 miles… so even if something does go wrong, you’ve covered 100%. Simple as that!

  60. I am a newby to the Equinox, however the gas mileage is not all that great, however neither was the gas mileage on the CRV..I will have to read the Edmunds reviews and get back to you, this is kind of scary. You can get a great deal on a 2011 CRV as it is being restyled for 2012..The Equinox will be in style for a few more years. The Equinox is a good deal quieter and more comfortable to drive.

  64. As the 2012 Equinox is very low in the front end and three times I have had to have the black plastic put back on due to hitting or nudging something, I decided to do something about it.I installed an aftermarket Safari Light Bar. however it does not have a skid plate.

Not so sure I like the look, however will get use to it and will help with the low front end.
