As General Motors officially announced the impending arrival of the Cadillac XTS and a “future compact” which we believe to be called the ATS, they also made the announcement that the massive assembly plant in Oshawa, Ontario will receive $117 million for XTS production. The investment will also have 400 jobs “created or retained”.
The 4,500 employee plant currently produces the Buick Regal, Chevrolet Equinox, Camaro and current generation Impala.

117 million dollars of front wheel drive for the standard of the world.
I just don’t get why GM is not building and investing in plants in the USA. We,not Canada, supplied the bail out money and we need those jobs. I was always a GM guy,but i tell you what, I’ve had this 2012 GT Mustang that i rented from Hertz for a week now and let me tell you, this thing is a quality machine. I had a SS Camaro convertible from Avis last month and the Mustang smokes it, with 1.2 less liters. Don’t you thing GM is beating a dead horse with those push rods ?
Paulie,
See: http://gmauthority.com/blog/2011/05/gm-to-invest-2-billion-nationwide-4000-jobs/, http://gmauthority.com/blog/2011/05/officially-official-gm-to-invest-331-million-into-arlington-tx-assembly-plant/, http://gmauthority.com/blog/2011/07/gm-to-trickle-129-million-into-bedford-indiana-toledo-ohio-wyoming-michigan-plants/, http://gmauthority.com/blog/2011/06/fairfax-kansas-to-receive-20-million-in-retooling/, http://gmauthority.com/blog/2011/07/gm-to-trickle-129-million-into-bedford-indiana-toledo-ohio-wyoming-michigan-plants/… and there’s plenty more.
Also, the Mustang beats the Camaro because of it’s power to weight ratio. Not because the engine is a pushrod V8. The ZR1 cradles a pushrod V8, and is officially the fastest production car around the Nurburgring today.
gm wisdom seeker,
I’m also not a fan with what the XTS currently is on paper compared to cars like the A8, S Class, 7 Series and the like, but that doesn’t mean it will not sell. There’s also the rumored Omega flagship to look forward to. http://gmauthority.com/blog/2011/07/rwd-cadillac-flagship-reportedly-approved-could-be-a-while-until-launch/
That is good news Manoli 🙂
Technically speaking, Canada supplied part of the bail-out funds. Not as much as the US, but part of it.
Also, GM’s manufacturing strategy includes manufacturing all over the world, including in Canada and in the U.S. in North America. Conversely, that Mustang you rented probably has more Canadian parts content than many GM vehicles do today (even the ones made in Canada).
I am curious of what the ATS Caddy will look like and be priced at. But hope it doesn’t turn out to be like what the Cimeron (Cavalier) or the problematic Catera (Opel) was. A mini version of the 2011 CTS coupe would be an awesome looking car.
It’s Funny But we had the reverse thought of my wifes Mustang when we got the Camaro RS/SS! The Camaro kicked it’s butt and is just so much more cooler than the Mustang!
Yes the Mustang is long gone. The only nice Mustang was the Saleen and the new Shelby GT 500.
Only thing was the Camaro’s exhaust note is to quiet! But that can be fixed!
Manoli
The ZR1 yes indeed is the fastest, but it is being stuffed with air from the 2300 eaton blower. That pushrod motor has just about reached it’s end.I was talking to Engineer John Heinricy about the demise of the pushrod motor. He tells me that Chevy still has a few tricks left up it’s sleeve for it,like direct injection and continuous variable valve timing, but beyond that it’s time is limited. The only thing saving it now is that it is compact compared to the wide dual overhead cam, four valve engines. All things being equal the overhead, four valve motors win.Take a look at the LNF and the i think it’s the LNX of LFX,the six cylinder in the camaro and cts. These new four valve motors are quite nice. The new ” Coyote” in the mustang gt and the tweaked version in the Boss 302 are fine examples of naturally aspirated four valve motors. The Northstar never really did much for me or the LT5 in the early 90’s ZR1.
Paulie, FYI Canada provided GM with 8.1 billion in bailout money, no its not as much as the US provided but they don’t have as much manufacturing here as they do in the US.If you really want to get upset take a look at how much money Mexico provided in the GM bailout, ZERO (0) & GM is expanding there, look south to vent your anger not North, Canadians did their part to help GM !!
Rudy,Thanks for the info,i didn’t know that Canada provided bailout money to GM and i kind of figured that Mexico provided zero, but still, the manufacturing needs to be done in house,so to speak. We as Americans, need these jobs and any other help to get this country turned around. Not just GM,but Ford and the Mopar boys need to take care of us Americans that got them where they are now.
Paulie, no ,problem on providing you thie info on Canada’s help to GM,don’t let anyone tell you Canada did not help GM because its an issue close to me because for the last 26 years I have worked for GM Canada, I want to see this company return to its great past but we have to educate people on the facts, GM has sold millions of cars & trucks in Canada over the last 80 years & I would like to see that continue, if a company sells it’s product in a country then some people of that country should be able reep the rewards of employment with that company don’t you think?
Rudy,Thanks again for your point of view,it made me think about it a little differently. For some reason i never thought about GM products being bought and sold in Canada, maybe i was thinking use guys up north had some other cars and trucks.Forgive my narrow mindedness,I apologize if i offended you or anyone else. What vehicle are you involved in building up there in Canada? I live in Baltimore, Maryland, where we used to build the Chevy Astro van and GMC Safari and the Monte Carlo. GM shut the doors and a lot of us moved up to the Wilmington Delaware plant where we were building Pontiac and Saturns. Now you know what happened there. But we do have a nice new Allison Transmission Plant that just broke ground for a new electric motor plant next to the transmission plant in Whitemarsh Maryland, north of Baltimore
Paulie: in Oshawa we make Camaros, Buick Regals, Impalas, and Chevy Equinox. i have worked there for a little over 26 years as well and i would like to see all of GMs workers have a little more stability on both sides of the border. its too bad the Auto Pact was dismantled because it provided great benefits to both countries auto sectors. good paying auto jobs generate many spinoffs and drive a lot of R&D
