OnStar

OnStar Corporation is a fully-owned subsidiary of General Motors that provides subscription-based telematics services such as in-vehicle security, hands-free calling, turn-by-turn navigation, and remote diagnostics in the United States, Canada, and China. A similar service is branded ChevyStar in Latin American markets.

Currently, the service has more than six million customers and is available for all General Motors and Saab vehicles containing the OnStar hardware. On July 24, 2011, OnStar became available to drivers of non-GM vehicles by way of a rear-view mirror containing OnStar technology. Known as OnStar FMV (For My Vehicle), the mirror provides some of the features offered by the built-in system, including Automatic Crash Response, Stolen Vehicle Tracking, Turn-by-Turn Navigation, and Roadside Assistance.

Recently, OnStar began offering apps known as RemoteLink (previously called MyLink). Available for devices running the Apple iOS and Google Android operating systems and most model-year 2010 and 2011 GM vehicles, the RemoteLink app provides users with the ability to execute remote functions (such as remote start, lock/unlock doors) and view vehicle information (such as available range and tire pressure) in the app. OnStar engineers are considering offering RemoteLink apps for Blackberry and Windows Phone devices, but no official confirmation has been issued about these additional platforms.
