Chevrolet Spark Set For Mid-2012 U.S. Launch

Back in April during the 2011 New York International Auto Show, GM North America president Mark Reuss dropped the news on the media in attendance that the Chevrolet Spark A-segment mini car is indeed headed to the U.S. market and is set to launch sometime next year to battle with cars such as the Scion iQ and Fiat 500. But that was as far as he went.

According to the crew at LeftLane, we can expect the Spark to launch in the States somewhere in the middle of 2012 as a 2013 model. Engine choices still remain a mystery (we don’t see the European version’s 1.0-liter 66 horsepower and 1.2-liter 78 horsepower engines being all that viable here). Perhaps a naturally aspirated 1.4L Ecotec is in the cards, but we don’t know for sure — we will keep digging until we get an answer. Regardless, everyone is expecting an attractive 40-plus miles per gallon mark (though we think that number needs to be higher, otherwise customers will most likely stick with the Sonic).

  1. Great news, personally I would like to see all three of the concepts Trax, Beat, and Groove. The Groove especially… This would provide a range of Scion like vehicles… And the buyer would have a choice… Anyway the Spark is an Ok compromise, just take it more upscale for the states, definately offer a z-spec… I am looking forward to this vehicle…

  6. I’ve heard rumblings of this car getting 47 mpg combined. . however I do not know how accurate those rumblings are. It would need to produce at least this mileage to not crowd the Sonic.

    1. But then again, it will be much less expensive than the Sonic…. so it doesn’t have to outperform it by that much.

  8. The bottom line with this vehicle will be percieved value and quality, if people feel its just another Geo Metro which had its share of issues then this car will suffer. However based on what I have seen this car has potential to blow out the competition…
