Chevrolet Sonic Launch Underway

GM’s Orion Township, Michigan has officially kicked off the launch of the Chevrolet Sonic yesterday, with production-spec models appearing in dealerships this fall.

The asking price of the Sonic will be $14,495, while the five-door hatchback will run $15,395. A bit pricey for the subcompact segment, but remember that this is the only vehicle in its entire class that will be made in America. However, most of the Sonic’s components will be imported at first while gradually shifting to more and more domestic production.

But what you say, bottom line lacks visual refinment…

    1. At least alloys are standard.

  3. And my Chevy Dealer told me yesterday there’s a constraint on my order because of the Sunroof.
They think it might be due to a parts shortage, but they’re not sure.
I’m REALLY hoping that I’ll be able to take delivery by September 6th to qualify for the 1 year Free auto insurance sponsored by MetLife (available only in Oregon & Washington).

  4. Honestly, Manoli, there is no excuse for why this car is so expensive. Built in the US or not. Let’s be true to the market…”Made in America” may be the honourable reason to buy a car, but the reality that many Americans live in is that “Made in Korea” or “Made in China”” (soon enough, I’m sure) is the only option, simply because it is what they can afford. And frankly, from what I am seeing, what they can afford may be the better option anyway. Have we seen what Hyundai is offering as standard equipment in the Accent?!? 4 wheel disc brakes among other things. I’d never buy the Sonic because I simply HATE the name. Can you imagine a grown 34 year old like me telling anybody I drive a “Sonic”. I’m sorry. “Aveo” may have a bad reputation (as if “Malibu” had a good one prior to the reinvention) but it beats the heck out of aligning myself with a hyperactive hedgehog.

  6. While I also have reservations about the name (Hedgehog and Burger joint), I like this car. The pricing does not surprise me at all. Most people who purchase a Ford Fiesta do so with plenty of equipment on it that drives the price up beyond the base price of the Sonic. I believe that GM is putting many features standard on the Sonic that are optional on the Fiesta. While perusing Ford dealer lots, I noticed that most Fiestas on the lot include alloys, sunroof, SYNC, etc. and are priced between $17,500 to $20,000. If the Sonic has many features standard, it would have fewer options so the price would be competitive with its main competition.

  7. The price really should not be an issue if the car had a stronger design language and was more refined.

    1. Stronger design language? Did you see that grill and front end? I think you should take a look at the Mazda 2 or Accent which basically just copy everything from the rest of the model lineup and just shrink it

  8. Mozeby, for me this is a reskined Aveo. The design language lacks the refinment of more recent Chevrolet’s, now I have not seen it in person so Iam holding back further comments…
    I agree mazda2 is cheasy…
