OnStar has announced that it has changed the name of MyLink to RemoteLink, ending months of speculation surrounding the new name for the iPhone and Android application.
The rebrand comes in an effort to differentiate OnStar’s mobile application offerings from the new breed of Chevrolet infotainment systems, also dubbed MyLink.
“To help improve customer understanding of the mobile app and infotainment offerings across Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac, OnStar is renaming the OnStar MyLink mobile app OnStar RemoteLink,” reads OnStar’s press release.
In April, GM Authority exclusively reported that OnStar was looking to change the name of the MyLink app. GM Authority also provided a list of potential names for the app, of which RemoteLink was not part of.
The GM Authority Take
Just so we’re all on the same page, let’s do a quick recap: first we had the OnStar MyLink — the app. Then we had Chevy MyLink — the infotainment system that will be available on 2012 model year and newer Chevrolets. As you may imagine, this confused users and thus the reason for the new name.
So, what do you think of the RemoteLink name? Sound off in the comments!

OnStar does a Terrible job of Marketing it’s Product……It Truly Boarders on the Criminally Insane!!!! The Product I think is still Awe Inspiring and innovative, just wished the felt the same cause when the Media starts to Compare what Ford and others are offering(An there’s ain’t even Close), then that’s where the Real Confusion and Frustration begins!!! I do a better Job Explaining to People what OnStar Really does then they do Marketing it!!! What a Waste of Technology!! 🙁 🙁 🙁
Why don’t I have remote start on my link. My 2011 malibu does have it.
I think it’s a BAD deal when GM only has a few of the 2010 models that are compatible with the mobil app. I paid more for my Sierra than the other two models it is compatible with but I don’t get to use it. OnStar & GM— I will remember this!
Why is there no auto start and off on my app for 2011 Chev Malibu
Peter, what do you mean by “auto start and off” — do you mean remote start?
If so, it should be available on the 2011 Malibu with the RemoteLink app…
Yes sorry i did mean that. All as I have is lock unlock and horn. I even deleted it and reinstalled but it is still the same. Very strange.
Does you Malibu have remote start on the remote?
Yes it does. Strangest thing. Not sure why it did not come with app though.
That is strange. I would call up OnStar from your car and ask them!
Also, are you running the latest version of the app?
Sorry, false information on my part. On the OnStar website, it says that the Malibu doesn’t support remote start. It seems that it’s the only vehicle where that’s the case. Weak!
My Sierra Hd 2500 has a all the option of newer Sierras but I cannot get a Ipod remote link to this vehicle. My question is will this ever be available or do we have to buy a newer vehicle for this app to work?
No it sure will not. Congratulations on your purchase that’s already outdated. Be sure and send GMC and OnStar a nice message about how you feel on this. I cancelled my subscription to OnStar immediately when they told me my one year old pickup wouldn’t be compatible while other models from the same year would be compatible! Squeeky wheel gets the grease!
My 2012 Malibu ltz has a factory remote start but does not offer it on the remotelink app… I would keep onstar after the trial for that reason alone
Malibu 2012 LTZ; OnStar customer service just told me (02/01/2013) that a solution to the “auto start” is in the works, no ETA. Bah humbug! What’s the hold up?

I had the OnStar Remote Link App installed on both my and my wife’s Android Tablets. I loved it, and it worked great on my 2015 Malibu, LT1, except for the “Family Link” feature which I purchased, which is supposed to show you the location of your vehicle. I purchased it on 5/29/2016 and cancelled it on 6/4/2016.
The main problem that I am having is as follows: Like an idiot, I was messing with my Android Tablet’s brightness control, and I accidentally turn the brightness to completely dark (black screen). No matter how hard I tried, I could not get the brightness level back to a viewable condition. So, I had to reset the tablet back to its’ factory out of the box condition, and of course lost my “OnStar Remote Link App.
I went back to the “Google Play Store” to download the app again (the same place I downloaded it previously).
OnStar had updated the App to a new version. Now if I try to download the new version of the app, I get an error message saying “Your Device is Not Compatible”. The previous version on my wife’s Android Tablet still works fine. However, if I go to the “Google Play Store on my wife’s Android Tablet and try to download the “new and improved OnStar Remote Link App”, I get an error message stating, “Your device is incompatible. This App is for Smart Phones Only!”
OnStar removed the prior version of the App that worked on Android Tablets, and replaced it with one that only works on “smart phones”. I can not find the previous version of the App on OnStar’s website, nor anywhere on the web! I even emailed OnStar Technical Support, and ask where I could get the previous version of the App for my Android Tablet. I was told that it is no longer available.
Come on OnStar, what kind of idiots would release a new version of an App without keeping an archived version of the prior app that worked, “just in case”? I know that they have to have the previous version stored on file somewhere!
Is this a marketing ploy to force me to purchase a “smart phone”?
I just got done talking to OnStar “Technical Support” via an “un-smart” telephone, the rep. said she did not know, but would open a case file for me.
“THANKS OnStar!”
Does anyone know where I can download the prior Remote Link App “Version 2.0 (1670) Release”?
I even tried to find the app file on my wife’s Android Tablet, so I could copy it, and install it on my Android Tablet; but “sneaky OnStar” has the file hidden, and no name indicating anything regarding OnStar. Does anyone know the file name?
I am not happy with the “Technical Support” that I have received, thus far!
PLEASE HELP!
Thanks,
Jeff
