Originally showcased back in February, the OnStar Advanced Telematics Operations Management System (ATOMS) and GE’s Grid IQ Demand Optimization Solution will finally see real-world application by the third quarter of this year. The pilot looks to optimize the charging efficiency of plug-in vehicles like the Chevy Volt by collecting and analyzing data that provides insight about when it’s best to charge them.
The consumer benefit from this ginormous science project is (hopefully) a more affordable electric bill, thanks to the vehicle knowing to charge when demand on the grid is the least strained. For more, have a look at the presser.
