The proposed 56.2 miles-per-gallon CAFE target for 2025 has automakers scrambling and bracing for the worst. Mark Reuss, GM‘s North America President spoke to Ward’s Auto about the possible target for the future. Reuss says it’s going to be tough, but automakers will have to comply.
“It’s our job to take a look at it, digest it, and put together a data set of what it takes to do it. The auto industry does not get easier. It always gets tougher. That’s the challenge and that’s what our jobs are. If even-stricter guidelines require billions more in investment, so be it. It’s not an either/or thing. It’s how we get there with cars and trucks that consumers really want to buy at a [price] that doesn’t put unreasonable cost on them,” Reuss told Ward’s.
GM sounds like they’re ready for whatever CAFE throws their way.

I understand the opposition. But living through the “gas crisis” of the 1970’s, I saw so much animosity towards gas saving imports for taking away American auto sales and jobs.
Detroit was blindsided and scrambled to find ways to produce fuel efficient cars to lure Americans back.
Since then we’ve seen ups & downs in fuel prices. Wouldn’t CAFE be an investment for Detroit to avoid a repeat of lost sales and jobs due to a sudden spike in gasoline prices? What if in the future a major war broke out in the Middle-East that almost completely stops oil coming over from Saudi Arabia?
I believe CAFE will help the United States lower its consumption of oil in the future.
It may be a bitter pill to take now but the benefits of higher fuel efficient vehicles may make us look back at these CAFE regulations in saving fuel the same way we see anti-lock brakes, seatbelts, and airbags in saving lives. They work!
Cafe is ridiculous! Washington lawmakers dont have a clue about manufacturing, about the laws of physics and yet the proceed with passing absolutely stupid laws and regulations! They want safer cars and still expect unrealistic fuel mileage! Even I know that something has to absorb the energy in a crash. And that has to be metal or components of material that can absorb energy! So stop siding with the donkeys in Washington.
To add the missing words. To be safe you need material to absorb energy. That material has weight. Weight added to a vehicle subtracts from fuel mileage. Oh also the donkeys in washington want the air coming out the tail pipe to be cleaner that the air going into the engine. So they want safer vehicles that dont pollute and run for ever on a drop of gas. Get real. Its time to the liberal donkey holes out of washington!
Allready with the negitivity, I bet Honda and BMW will make press releaces saying how much of a positive learning growing ecc ecc challage this is. Maybee Maximum Bob could have gotten away with such a statement, but I doublt his European breeding would have allowed him to make it. Mark just impressed Sara Palin and 3 guys in Navada that collect muscle cars; he’s got to learn to impress grown ups.
