Leaked: Unofficial Engine Details For GM’s Next Generation Silverado, Sierra

In a report coming from Pickuptrucks.com, General Motors is anticipated to offer four updated or all-new gasoline engines for the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup line to go with the outstanding 6.6-liter Duramax diesel engine featured in the HD models.

Going off what we know, all of the new gasoline engines will feature direct injection and their blocks will be made of aluminum. PTC also expects GM to continue offer a 5.3-liter V8 engine for the half-ton models, and a twin-turbocharged six-pot capable of competing with Ford’s 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 engine. What’s more, the HD line will finally see a 6.2-liter V8 that has remained exclusive to the 1500 Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks, while the half-ton line will share a 6.0-liter V8 with the HD trucks in return. All transmissions are expected to be in the six-speed variety, but we wouldn’t be surprised if an eight speed showed up either.

  1. I really like the present design, looks like a truck. The cheyenne concept while a nice concept at the time needs some work, the renderings detail a good balance or I hope they do from the little I can see.

    1. I’m pretty sure I saw a cloaked next generation Silverado at Milford earlier this week while I was shown the 2013 Malibu… but of course I couldn’t take photos. At a brief glance, the truck appeared to be more streamlined than the current generation model. That’s about all I could make out.

  2. Manoli I didn’t see you at the press event, but you are right the next gen will be clean and have some of the best areodynamics in the industry, then engine choices may go all the way down to a four cylinder turbo being reviewed now for fuel economy, weight is the number one priority to get better fuel economy and everything is being looked at to reduce weight. some of the design profiles you have seen on recent cars by GM will make it to production, for example take a look at how clean the side windows of the Malibu are, this clean line approach is being used on the full size trucks. Small displacement v-8 is also on the board.

  3. Where’s the diesel for the regular pickups? Come on. I would think that with the CAFE standards raised to where they are now a 3.0L or so diesel would be forthcoming. The DMAX V6 would be a good candidate, bumped up a few hp, of course.

  4. I’d love to see the Chevy LUV brought back to life. Maybe with a small diesel as an option. No reason a turbo 4 diesel couldn’t be used as a base engine in a mid-sized truck application either.

    1. Won’t seem like a smoke show when the unveiling actually occurs. Although it GM has put itself into a vulnerable position by having the oldest, least competitive truck offerings on the market today… should have/could have been avoided, but it is what it is. My bet is when the new trucks come out, you’ll see a swing of RAM and Ford truck guys in the market for new trucks coming over to the GM side, much like you just went to RAM.

  9. I loved the GM Trucks when this body style came out. The only big problem I saw was the 3 piece from bumper, what an eyesore. By the looks of the pic above they got that problem solved

Now for our favorite form of competition: Ford vs. Chevy vs. Ram. As you read last month, the diesel-powered ½-ton rumors are stirring again. We have reason to believe that GM will be the first to market. With a remodeling scheduled for ’13 models, what could be better than slipping in the diesel option at this time? We’ll soon see, but our sources tell us a ½-ton diesel Silverado could be unveiled as early as July, and you will indeed find a compact V-8 under the hood. Look for Ram to follow suit, and then Ford.
