If all the the features and perks offered by OnStar (such as vehicle diagnostics, MyLink mobile apps, automatic crash response, turn-by-turn navigation, Virtual Assistant, stolen vehicle and roadside assistance, as well as handsfree calling — to name a few) aren’t enticing enough for you to subscribe to the GM telematics service, did you know that OnStar subscribers are also eligible for discounts on their auto insurance?
That’s right, some (but not all) auto insurance companies offer exclusive discounts to OnStar subscribers — with certain insurers offering as much as 54 percent off the yearly insurance premium. According to OnStar, it’s one way that insurance firms recognize “our safety, security, and advanced technology features.”
As of this writing, OnStar highlights five participating insurers offering discounts to subscribers on its website, including GMAC Insurance, High Point Auto Insurance, Liberty Mutual, State Farm, and 21st Century Insurance. Here are their offers (current as of this writing):
GMAC Insurance
- Low Mileage Discount and Active OnStar Subscriber Discount.
- Save up to 54%, depending on your annual mileage—the less you drive the more you can save. Even if you drive more than 15,000 per year, you could still save up to 20% on select coverages.

The GM Authority Take
If you drive a GM vehicle, an OnStar subscription is a no-brainer in my humble opinion. Between the safety and convenience features offered by GM’s telematics arm, the service is well worth its cost (although owners of GM vehicles that aren’t compatible with OnStar’s MyLink apps may be of a different opinion). These insurance discounts are yet another reason to get OnStar — and save in the process!
Unfortunately, AllState auto insurance (my current insurer) doesn’t think that OnStar is worthy of a discount… Looks like I’ll be switching insurance companies when the time comes.

My insurance company, AMICA, also gives a discount for OnStar.
Thanks Rob, good to know!
Nice to know. I’ll have to check on that. We will be starting CRUZE 2012 production end of June 2011. Alex, any word on a CRUZE hatch for us at GM LORDSTOWN ??
Unfortunately, no word on Cruze hatch… yet. I’ll join the chorus in the fact that this just sucks. 🙁
Try using BlueStar 2010
I have Geico and I contacted them when I purchased my 2012 Equinox. They don’t give OnStar discounts. They said the discounts they are giving me are saving me more then OnStar discounts would. I then called GMAC and the quote I got from them was almost $400 a year more then what I am paying. I guess Geico was correct.
The article says, “save up to 45%.” Perhaps a better way to indicate saving would be to report the median or avg savings, rather than hyperbole.
With State Farm, my agent just confirmed I wilI save $6 per 6-month policy term from having an active OnStar subscription. Sure, the article says, “up to,” but I’ll bet the average is closer to my 2% savings (that’s with a 2009 top-of-the-line Yukon denali.)
Hey There. I discovered your weblog using msn. That is a really well written article. I will make sure to bookmark it and return to read more of your useful information. Thanks for the post. I’ll certainly comeback.
Nationwide doesn’t offer a discount for Onstar. This is disappointing. Guess I will be insurance shopping.
State Farm no longer offers a discount of active OnStar customers.
