Along with awarding individual vehicles, J.D. Power and Associates also ranks brands in their annual Initial Quality Study. For 2011, Cadillac was the highest scoring General Motors brand at 9th place, with an average of 103 problems per 100 vehicles. GMC was 10th, with 104 problems per 100 vehicles. Chevrolet tied BMW for 13th, with 109 problems per 100 vehicles, which is better than Ford, but short of Honda, Toyota and Hyundai. Buick was lost in the pack with 114 problems per 100 vehicles.
Those numbers may sound bad, but even Lexus — this year’s leader — had 73 problems per 100 vehicles. Then there’s Dodge, which came in last place with 137 problems per 100 vehicles. For those wondering, the industry average was charted at 107 problems per 100 vehicles. And the “problems” are based on numerical scores, rather than statistical significance according to the disclaimer.
