UAW To Push For Higher Second-Tier Pay Wages

In a report from the Detroit Free Press, United Auto Workers Vice President Joe Ashton wants to see a raise in the $14 in hourly wages that GM plant workers will make under the second-tier pay bracket or move some workers into the much better paying first-tier wage bracket that workers at plants such as Arlington and Flint Assembly are making, which stands at $28 an hour.

Ashton points out that $14 an hour is “not a middle-class wage,” but then again, are these wages aimed for the middle class forty-somethings with mortgages and families? Or younger, single individuals with not as much fiscal obligations?

  1. No it is not a middle class wage, but it is a manufacturing wage, typical for manufacturing jobs. Unfortunately middle class wages are pretty much non-existent today, or limited to select white collar workers with 4 years of college.
