It’s been apparent that many of you who read and comment on GM Authority own a 2010 General Motors vehicle that is not compatible with the OnStar MyLink smartphone app. Those in this situation are more or less bummed because there are several 2010 models that didn’t make the compatibility cut. So we did some question asking for you…
OnStar’s Vijay Iyer explained to us that the reason several 2010 vehicles don’t work with the OnStar MyLink app is related to compatibility issues, either caused by dated OnStar hardware in the vehicles themselves or because the vehicles’ programming cannot properly communicate with the app. Despite this, we’re told that OnStar is making an effort to make the application compatible, but there’s no telling how long it will take, or if they will succeed in doing so.
Like it or not, that’s what we’re told is going on. But we hope that OnStar will find a way to offer the awesome MyLink, which may soon get a name change, to the rest of the 2010 model year GM family that remains incompatible.

GM is a very large company. I am one of those people that purchased a 2010 and cannot use this feature even though at the time of purchase I was told it would work with 2010 vehicles. Given the size of GM, they should force OnStar to fix the problem in a fixed time frame or GM will stop putting OnStar in their vehicles. GM has the power but will not use it – I think they should.
Well, that is until we get to the fact that GM owns OnStar…
I do sympathize with you in that you were misinformed by your dealer — but at the time, everyone thought that 2010s would have backwards compatibility.
However, if backwards compatibility is not possible for 2010 model year vehicles — an aftermarket (LPO) kit should be made and offered for an additional fee. So here’s my question: would you be willing to pay a fee to have your 2010 updated to the proper OnStar hardware?
I have purchased my 2010 LT Silverado in November towards the end, if I would have known I would have waited the extra month to get this feature. After all these trucks are not cheap and I am a loyal GM customer as this is my second one. I would feel appreciated if they would go the extra little bit to include us in this new era. I would as well as others I’m sure would be willing to pay for an upgrade but do feel that we should not have to. It would seem to me that they have used an older technology in my vehicle and passed it off as new for that sake of a month, knowing they would be bringing this technology to Canada they should have been responsible enough to install the appropriate technology to accommodate this feature. It is only a month’s difference in purchase time. I have everything but heated leather seats. I hope On star can accommodate us in the near future.
I agree, I was told by onstart themselves that my 2010 GMC SLT would be made compatilble sometime this year. I would be willing to pay for an upgrade if I had too, although that was never mentioned to me when they told me my new Truck would be made compadible sometime this year (2011).
I think it’s a BAD deal when GM only has a few of the 2010 models that are compatible with the mobil app. I paid more for my Sierra than the other two models it is compatible with but I don’t get to use it.
OnStar & GM— I will remember this!
I purchased a 2010 SRX because it was a brand new design and allegedly represented the newest and best technology GM had to offer. Now I am being told that the onStar myLink feature is not compatible this newer technology but works fine with two older vehicle designs that were seemingly closer to the end of their lifecycles (DTS and Escalade). I struggle to find a positive way to interpret this situation. Is this a matter of the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing, a planned strategy or a lack of attention to detail?
I’m not sure what the problem is but they don’t want to make it right with us. Yesterday I cancelled my OnStar services in rebutal to them not making all 2010’s compatible. I, like the someone earlier, would even pay to upgrade mine so it would work.
The only way to get OnStar’s attention on this is to get into their pockets!
Seems to be a matter of two of the above: the left hand now knowing what the right hand is doing and a lack of attention to detail and forethought.
I ran with the free year of OnStar on my 2010 Equinox but did not continue the subscription due to the fact that the hardware in my vehicle is not compatible with the software app. I mean really? GM is willing to to let go hundreds of thousands of dollars because they can’t come up with a solution?
Let me know if a solution comes up. I’ll be a paying customer again…
I’m in the same boat… got the OnStar app and service only to find out my ‘box wasn’t covered. Now not planning to renew OnStar unless the apps features can be made to work with my car. OnStar/GM’s loss as far as I’m concerned.
I got tired of waiting for Onstar for this app so i designed my own app. We will soon have it mobile capable. At this time our app offers more vehicle control.
Check it out at http://www.obdCANeX.com and let me know your thoughts.

I have a 2009 Hummer H3 and would LOVE to have this app work in my vehicle. I’ve been reluctant to put in an aftermarket remote start for the winter in hopes that they’ll come out with a working app for older vehicles. I’m sure lots of people would be willing to pay a fair price for some kind of plug and pay update module for less than new gen Onstar.
which smartphone is not compatible with GM OnStar Mylink System?
@Ruben Technically speaking, MyLink is now RemoteLink — and it’s a smartphone app:
http://gmauthority.com/blog/2011/07/onstar-rebrands-mylink-app-to-remotelink/
It’s compatible with iOS devices as well as Androids and Blackberrys, but it depends on the OS version of the latter two…
I too am very disappointed in Onstar/GM. I own a 2009 Hummer H2 that has every option available. It appears that the hardware is compatible with Onstar remote diagnostics and other features like FamilyLink. But the RemoteLink application is not compatible with our vehicle, even though the hardware in the vehicle appears to support it. Come on, GM, there have been a lot of requests to make this application work with other 2010 models, and select 2009 (high end) models with the same hardware as the 2010’s (like my H2).
