You asked — and OnStar answered.
Well, maybe you — the very loyal GM Authority reader that you are — didn’t ask, since you visit GM Authority so often and are up on the latest and greatest about The General, its brands, and OnStar. But “normal” people submitted questions about the FMV on OnStar’s Facebook page and Rich Martinek — Director of marketing and sales for retail products at OnStar — answered.
Check the video below to find out more about the FMV, how it works, and learn how OnStar plans to handle the expected influx of new customers and blue button presses, among other things.
The most interesting question — and subsequent answer from Rich — is why someone simply can’t put an existing OnStar mirror (from a GM vehicle) into a non-GM car.

I feel the same way that this subscriber does. This should be a free upgrade, for original owners that had their analog system disabled in 2008, without prior warning, or a plan to upgrade their vehicles. After buying a new 2002 Avalanche and talking to both GM and OnStar, after my OnStar was disabled, and getting no satisfaction, I decided that was the last GM vehicle I would ever buy. The reason I purchased the Avalanche was so my wife could feel safe and that it had a “Lo-Jack” as a deterrent, against theft. So I now buy a Hyundai, which has something called BlueLink, which is equal to the original OnStar, that I had in the past. I might reconsider my position, if you took care of this issue.
what if you owned that is more then 10 yrs old like the gentleman was talking about cause there a lot of people out there with older vechicles that might want it in there vechicles
I have two vehicles with OnStar, one a GM with the factory installed system, and the other a Honda Accord with FMV. Regarding vehicle thefts, since the OnStar mirror would be obvious to any would-be car thief (unlike Lojack that is hidden in the vehicle), what’s to stop a thief from simply disabling the OnStar mirror before the tracking process can begin?
Do you keep a log of calls that you automatically make when an accident occurs? Why I ask is that my 2009 Cobalt car had an accident on July 31, 2009 late evening. The vehicle VIN is 1G1AT58H197272153. Also. If the ignition problem the caused the power steering to fail and the air bags not to go off; would the OnStar system still work.
