As reported last night, General Motors North American President Mark Reuss has officially announced that the company plans on building the next generation Chevrolet Impala at the Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant along with the next generation Malibu, Volt and Opel Ampera. The facility will also see and additional $69 million in tooling and equipment to support next generation Impala production.
The addition of both the new Impala and Malibu will add around 2,500 hourly and salaried jobs, but as stated before, the 1,000 1,350 workers who are currently laid off get first dibs. The company is expected to reach out to those workers by September. And while the Malibu production is slated to begin at the plant early next year, the new Impalas will not be rolling out until 2013.

I had said this over a month ago, the good news is the car looks great and everyone will be impressed by the somewhat retro/futuristic styling on the car you have some spy shots of the car it was the unable to identify car it is on the GM 352 (Cadilac chassis) it will be full size. the next trucks- full size also are amazing, as well as the new small pickup very small Ed Welburn is doing a great job on design now all that is needed is to get the product to market Please hurry up with the Sonic GM is building saleable units now get them to dealers soon. GM pulled ahead the Malibu and is pulling ahead the Impala mid-late 2012 but why didn’t they pull ahead the Sonic They are loosing many sales to Ford and Kia/Hyundia.
Wow. Exciting!
This production move just cost the Oshawa plant 2000 jobs I would think, as the Impala is presently produced in Canada. There must be some political overtones to this nonsense.
I wouldn’t call it political, and Oshawa isn’t losing 2,000 jobs over this. In replacement of the Impala Oshawa gets the Cadillac XTS and they recently attained the Buick Regal. So, there you go.
You are incorrect. The Impala is moving to the flex line where the Camaro, Caddy and Buick are built but the consolidated line (where I work) where the Impala is presently built on 3 shifts has no product to build after the present Impala builds out. Goodbye 2000 + jobs. Also it will only be overflow from Hamtramck that Oshawa builds. Guess all our quality awards over the years don’t mean dick.
I’ll be here to report on the layoffs, if there are any. From what I gather, they current generation Impala will continue its life for fleet use. No?
It’s so unfortunate that GM Brass did not include those details in the announcement.
I appreciate your up-date.
We try our best to keep everyone updated! If you have any other questions, we can try and have them answered as well.
