40 Percent Of Orion Township Assembly Energy To Come From Landfill Gas

General Motors is looking to save itself some money and protect the environment by utilizing the natural gas emanating from a landfill near its assembly plant in Orion Township, Michigan to produce 40 percent of its needed energy. In doing so, the company will save $1.1 million in annual energy costs for the plant, which will be building the all-new Chevrolet Sonic and Buick Verano later this year.

“With these improvements, we’ll reduce greenhouse gas production by about 80,000 metric tons at a full three-shift capacity,” says Maureen Midgley in the presser, who is GM’s executive director of Global Manufacturing Engineering. She also points out that that much CO2 reduction is equal to about 14,000 vehicles per year, while the electricity reduction equals the output of around 3,500 homes.
