Wrapping up Chevy’s presentation during the 2011 New York Auto Show, General Motors North America boss man Mark Reuss talked about what we can expect from the brand in the coming year, listing off the new Malibu and Sonic as the obvious cars to expect, but then dropped a bombshell stating that the A-segment Chevrolet Spark will be making its way to U.S. showrooms. Hopefully this clarifies the overall confusion surrounding the U.S. launch of the vehicle.
Surprised? We are. Disappointed? Absolutely not.

What is the difference between the Spark and Sonic? Maybe he misspoke and meant to say the Sonic would be sold here? They look practically identical except for the headlamps to me.
Sonic is a little bit larger than the current Aveo.
The Spark is about the same size as the Mini Cooper. The Spark is a “city car” that will go head-to-head against the Smart fortwo & the Fiat 500.
I’m not surprised at all that the Spark will be coming here. After several confirmations form the PR person behind the US version of the Spark, plus with oil flirting near $110 a barrel and it’s already surpassed $4 a gallon in many areas, it just makes sense to bring the Spark to the US!
Now… where will it be built? Mexico? South Korea? USA? (thought that might be cost prohibitive at this time)
Thanks Manoli for the MUCH needed update! 😀
The Spark will be imported from another country, where it’s already built. It could be either S. Korea, Uzbekistan, Italy or India, but I’m betting that they will come from Korea. From what I’m understanding it’s a low-risk, low-cost and low-volume model for Chevy, so even if it doesn’t sell in raging numbers, there won’t be any harm done.
Guys, this has been talked about before in various forums. It might have slipped under Manoli’s radar (which surprises me!) but we’ve confirmed Spark for 2012 before now.
Jason, while I agree that this has been confirmed, there has been a great deal of misinformation circulating out there. Even a few months ago, Mark Reuss said during an interview that there had not been a firm decision on whether to bring the Spark to the U.S.
His speech at the NYIAS now solidify’s its arrival. I just wish GM would talk more about the US version of the Spark especially since oil (as of 21 April), has hit $112 a barrel!
Say, does anyone know if the Spark made an actual appearance at the NYIAS this year? If so, I’d sure like to know if it’s the pre-production US Version or the European version. If it’s the pre-production US Version, I’m dying to know what changes they’re planning on making.
The Spark was MIA at the show, but we will work on finding out more. We’re just as curious as you are!
✖ OMG!! ✖
I couldn’t believe it!!
☞ The other day, I filled up my smart car & had to pay $28!! ☜
I can’t believe how expensive it is to fill up my car!! ☹
I’ve GOT to get a car that gets better gas mileage, like the 2013 4-door hatchback Chevrolet Spark that’s due out during the first quarter of 2012!
It’s expected to get around 45mpg+ on the highway!! ッ ✌ ☮
I can carry 2x’s as many people in a Spark than a Smart… and for better gas mileage…
Come on Chevrolet!! We’re dying for the Spark!! ♪♬♫♬♪ ✔ ♡ ✌ ッ ✰ ☺
