Before the the official Chevrolet press conference but after the official global unveiling of the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu, the brand’s Facebook page has gone forward (somebody probably jumped the gun, again) and labeled a gallery titled “Introducing the All-New Malibu 2013 LTZ and ECO”, subtitled “Sleek lines, a great new touch console…and great fuel economy. The 2013 Malibu Eco, with 38 MPG’s.”
That number totally blows the segment wide open as far as a gas-only drivetrain goes. But does this mean drivers will be forced to drive a manual transmission as seen in the smaller Cruze Eco to achieve that number? We’ll tell you when Chevy’s press conference begins in approximately one hour at the time of this writing.

Good catch. With the 35 MPG forecast for the normal ‘Bu, this should put Chevy in a good position to meet the Government’s long-term mileage targets.
Wonder what the CITY rating is? Wonder what the gearing is.
This 38 highway sounds AWSOME, I had a 86 Pontiac Grand Am with the Iron Duke or Tech 4 engine, and 5sp it got 37 mpg crusing at 85+ on the insterstate, never dropped below 22mpg even idling in city trafic for 4 hours, and warming up on cold days. Seating was cramped though, not realy a mid size.
Wish GM would force more drivers to use a manual transmision though; not just Z06 Corvette drivers.
I actaually a little dissapointed with the 38mpg hwy number. I would have expected more since the larger LaCrosse with eAssist has been tested at 37mpg.
