GM VP Of Design Envisions Sportier Chevrolet Cruze

Ed Welburn, Vice President of Design for General Motors, has openly stated his yearning for a range-topping, performance oriented Chevrolet Cruze. The man seems to have put some thought into what he would like to see take shape, borrowing inspiring cues from the WTCC Cruze racecars, and the Cruze Z-Spec Concept by describing a Cruze with “A black exterior, butterscotch interior, a tidied-up treatment of the WTCC car’s wheel arches and air extractors in the hood… with a 2.0 turbo motor.”

Don’t we all.

Hopefully more of GM’s brass begin to yearn for a performance-oriented Cruze, and eventually gets the green light for production (if it hasn’t already and we just don’t know it yet).

While Welburn’s description is quite inciting, what would you like to see in a topped-out Cruze?

  1. 2.0 liter turbo, I hope they mean the 260hp one from the Cobalt SS and not the 220hp one from the Regal, The Cruze handles well enough, let’s give it some 260+Hp, positraction Diff LOVE!

  2. People have trashed the rear end of the Cruze as boring, but I just saw one today out and about. It is a really good looking car from behind. It seems very low to the ground, with a fairly wide base (probably at least as wide or a little wider than the Malibu). The lights are also well proportioned and shaped.

    1. I just bought a Cruze and I love the design/styling. My least favorite area is the rear, but it’s not that I don’t like it — it’s just that every other part (front/quarter/sides) look so great! That said, a pair of exhaust pipes mated to a 2.0 liter turbo diesel would make the rear end even better!

  3. 2.0 turbo motor makes this very interesting and needs to be produced…… 220 or 260 hp?

  4. I’m with Alex on this one. The diesel would be my choice for sure. But sticking with the above theme, I would love for a return of the SS badge or perhaps….wait for it…Z-20 …Notice I didn’t say Z-24 because I don’t want to see an engine larger than a 2.0 in this car. With current technology, that’s just silly. It would descend Cruze to the likes of Corolla or tC that are has-beens in the market clutching at relevance with a 2.5L engine, with only 180hp.
